Good old sticky notes

Hi,

After trying Ardour with a very buggy midi editor for days, I finally switched to Waveform 11 which seemed to have a more modern and less buggy midi editor but now I am experiencing good old sticky midi notes problem again, just another way than before. :(:(:(
During playback if I mute midi track when playhead is in the middle of a note, track is silenced but when I unmute the track (after playhead goes beyond the note), that note is stucked and sounds until the playhead finds another instance of that note (another note in the same line) / or playback is stopped and started again.

Maybe note off messages are not sent when track is muted? Is it possible to have a bug like this in 2020? :)
Anyone experiencing the same?
Possible solutions?

This bug is present only I have MIDI input disabled. When I enable default MIDI input (through port-0) problem disappears.
I don't know how these things connected, but maybe the solution is useful for others.
SOLVED

Correction: NOT SOLVED.
Midi note messages are in connection of track's midi input and for now a bit confused me..
- Case 1: no input selected for the track: "note off" and "note on" messages are both ignored if track is muted.
- Case 2: midi input is selected for track: only "note on" messages are ignored if track is muted AND pushing Mute button sends "note off" message (pushing Mute when playhead is in the middle of a note makes that note silent for ever, it won't be audible any more, even if unmuting the track).

Someone please explain :)

I presume that you would normally not want to process muted tracks, so the default behavior is to send midi off along with track output. When you re-enable, it will process normally, including NEW MIDI events in that track; not to go back in time and find out if the last event had decayed to 0.

I don't know if the dev's can set up a MUTE option to MUTE OUTPUT but continue processing events, and I can see where you might have a mute option which is :
1- as is, no processing or output on muted tracks
2- simply send track output to null (MIDI only) or
3- track output to null for MIDI -or- Audio clips. (possibly because of sidechains?)

But you can do an "easy" workaround. Add a second volume control at the end, and set it to 0 but have it disabled. When you want to mute (but continue processing) legato notes, then just enable it to silence the track... when you disable again, it will continue as if nothing had happened, including those long sustained notes you may have had.

Not sure if setting up a submix could also be used... Possibly in a subgroup, muting the submix might allow "legato" to play through but be silenced at the submix level, which could be unmuted? You'd only need this for legato/pedal style tracks.

Hmm, OK so let say it is the normal behaviour for MIDI tracks. I don't know how it works in other DAWs but to me it sounds logical to place mute funtionality at the end of the "chain" to mute only the audio output of the track otherwise it will affect midi notes and content of the song.

Case 1 still remains. Is it a bug then?
When no midi input is selected, note off messages are ignored if track is muted, it can cause forever sounding notes if I mute in the middle of a note and unmute after the note.

Anyway, thanks for your answers!!

Case 1 is the current behavior; and is the only one available currently. I don't know if there is any other demand for functionality of my "proposed possible" alternatives of a new "mute" option. It's not really a bug.

Did you try my alternative, about placing a second volume control and disable it?

Yes, placing a volume control at the end of chain works, using folder or submix doesn't.

Just to be clear. If midi input is set for track muting sends note off message, if no midi input is set muting does not send note off, thats why notes get stuck. Do you mean this is the normal behaviour?
What is the connection between midi input and muting?
