I'm pretty picky with freeware as I don't like tinny or plasticky sounding synths.
Some free synths with uncompromising sound to check out in 2020 are:

Surge deserves a mention here, but otherwise, a pretty solid list. I dig Helm as well, I'm looking forward to Vital.

-blaukraut charlatan ( simple but great sounding )
-dexed
-u-he tyrell
-dat sound obxd ( now discodsp )
-synth 1 , oldie but goodie and the updated diode filter (LPDL) sounds absolutely great
-analog mafia rc808 ( former roland engineers ) , standalone and vst3 ( vst is buggy ) , great sounding drummachine
- Oh and ofcourse Hrast programmer diodow is free, tranzistow is minimum 50 euro ( the most complex awesome sounding vst ..too much to mention )
Diodow is kind of an appetizer for Tranzistow but still has awesome sounding zdf filters and flexible osc's

What happened to Vital? It looked very promising, but after a lot of noise for a couple of months, it was buried in silence. Launching was planned for 2020. Is it still being developed?

OB-Xd has some nice strings in its library. I know because I was one of those who programmed the sounds

Full Bucket has some nice string machines (Deputy, Tricent, Nabla)

Superwave p8 has some nice string Pads also have a look at EVOL vst has also those old jupiter type strings.. krakli to.. Cheese machine definitely and dont forget synth1

Yes, it's still getting developed and might get released soon. Matt says he wants Vital to be perfect which is probably why we haven't seen it get released yet.
