I assume if it dies I am out of luck?
Good idea to get a second dongle as a backup?
A fair question I've wondered too. Mines been going for 7 years thus far. Keep my computer on 24/7 too.
For me the dongle is nine plus years old.
I run the PC about once or twice per week.

If the dongle is lost or dies the license is in jeopardy I understand.
Is getting a backup dongle a good strategy?

Post

I met a guy that had put the dongle inside his laptop. When I traveled I ducktaped it on my USB soundcard together with a small USB hub.. needed only one USB cable to connect both at live gigs.

Send it to Steinberg and you will get a replacement. If it gets stolen, you talk to your insurance company and report it to the police. Steinberg might replace it if you have a copy if the police report, dunno..

Or use Studio One instead and use one of your 5 activations to get up and running again.

Actually they do have intention to get rid of the USB dongle. When is still unknown.
Meh. They have been saying that for years and I'm not waiting anymore.
I liked Cubase and Dorico, but last year I made two clients unhappy because they asked me for quick jobs while I was on the road and I couldn't deliver because I don't bring a USB stick on me every time I fly to French Guiana for a gig.
Granted: I mentioned it on the Steinberg forum and got eaten alive by a bunch of people who are seemingly sexually aroused by the, uh, dongle. No wait that last sentence came out wrong...
So you bring your expensive DAW laptop, studio headphones, soundcard and all cables when you travel. But the tiny usb dongle is the problem? To me, it smells like BS to stop using Cubase. There are other reasons of course..
+100... No one ever complains about having to lug around an audio interface with their computers. As long as the dongle isn't giving you technical issues, there are other things in any setup that are more likely to cause problems.

I had a dongle die on me around Cubase 5...ordered a new dongle from steinberg and they just transferred my programs over to the new dongle

Well, the awful attitude of people like you was a big factor too. "It smells like BS". Am I in trouble mummy?

 Exactly! Feels like if Steinberg get rid of the dongle some people will burn down the Steinberg HQ in protest.

To be fair, Steinberg at least has a way better dongle replace policy as VSL, they also use e-licenser (buy our special insurance or f*&# you!)

I hate dongles - all of them!

TBH, if they get rid of the dongle for Cubase, people may ask when they will get rid of the dongle for their other products, and that might be one of the reasons why they haven't come up with another solution yet.

But here's the thing: it doesn't have to be a zero sum game.
They can keep the dongle for those who like it and then also have a remote internet activation for those on the go. I mean, AVID does that and I couldn't think of a less forward thinking company

You people who say the dongle is no big deal are idiots. I have a Mac that has 2 usb ports. Two ports. I cant bus power more than 1 hard drive and I have AT LEAST TWO that I need for sample content when I do massive projects. Hubs wont work. They dont power the hard drives. If there were no dongle I could easily do this. As it is, I have to plug in 1 hard drive, write the parts, render to audio, unmount the drive, plug in the other drive, write more parts... If there are changes I have to do it all over again. It's a hassle for those of us who have other things going on and travel for gigs or business.

Also, I have at least 1 time out of 20 starting Cubase where it "Refuses" to see the dongle and I can't load Cubase. It's really annoying. I have purchased 2 extra dongles over the last 20 years to remedy a faulty one. that's an extra $60 my friends. NOT acceptable.

Stop complaining about things you know nothing about and go back to trolling.
