It also depends on the host's VST3 implementation if program changes will work.
E.g. Ableton Live does support the VST3 format, but currently does not support MIDI program changes with VST3 plugins.

But in the case of Cubase, we deliberately disabled the support for program changes when using the VST3 version.
The reason is that a previous version of Cubase had a bug in the VST3 implementation. If this feature was used in a project, and the user then reloaded the project, it would not load the last active preset, but the first preset from the MIDI program change list.

This bug has been fixed by Steinberg in newer versions, but our plugins cannot detect which version of Cubase they are being loaded in. In order to protect users using older Cubase versions, this feature remains unavailable.

If you need it in Cubase, please use the VST2 version.

Got it, thanks for the explanation.

Yelling is not a habit in the industry of software development.

Just for curiosity's sake, which exact Cubase versions were affected, and from which version is the behavior regarding program changes fixed?

This should be a preference, perhaps, so that users can enable program change support at their responsibility.

Also, from your experience, are there any other VST3 compliant DAWs with similar issues regarding program change?

Steinberg fixed the issue in Cubase 9.0, and later also in Cubase 8.5.30.
Older Cubase versions will likely still exhibit this problem.

During our tests we didn't find any other hosts suffering from this.

Awesome thanks for that OP. I finally now have Zebra after years of pining away desiring it. I can’t find this info in the “user guide.” Is the a more comprehensive source of info about Zebra?

Zebra is an amazing synth btw.

Lastly, why isn’t this sticky’d?

Page 18, "MIDI Programs".
The user guide is the comprehensive source you need ;)

We're happy to check this out if you tell us which combination of host/plug-in version don't seem to work.
please add midi program change to triple cheese! I love that thing!

I'm having an issue with how Zebra2 VST3 reacts to bank changes. I am sending MSB, LSB and a program change each time, but with the VST3 the bank/patch does not change when only the bank (MSB for Zebra2) changes value. The bank/patch only changes when the program changes value.

No issue with the VST2 version. I'm using Zebra2 rev12092 64bit, Reaper v6.34 64bit, ReaControlMIDI

The new version has a "MIDI Programs" folder. Quoting page 8 of the user guide:

-----------
MIDI Programs
All presets (up to 128) present in this folder will be loaded into memory when the first instance of TripleCheese starts. MIDI Programs can then be switched via MIDI Program Change. As the MIDI Programs are accessed in alphabetical order, it’s best to prefix each name with an index ‘000 rest-of-name’ to ‘127 rest-of-name’.

Unlike regular presets, MIDI Programs cannot be added, removed or renamed on the fly. Changes will only take effect after the host application has been restarted.

The MIDI Programs folder can contain up to 127 sub-folders of 128 presets, switched via Bank Select (CC#0) preceding the Program Change message. The MIDI Programs folder itself is bank 0, sub-folders are addressed in alphabetical order starting with bank 1.

When TripleCheese receives a program change it will display the bank and program numbers to the left of the preset name e.g. ‘0:0’ for the first preset in the first bank (in certain hosts the first bank/preset is designated ‘1’ instead of the correct ‘0’).

To avoid another possible source of confusion, please make sure that there are no junked presets in the MIDI Programs folder. All files there will be adressed, even if hidden.

I was just watching a video on YT and the guy changed presets with his MIDI keyboard just like that. I know you can change presets with the MIDI keyboard but only 128 of them. I've got quite a few plus a 1666 of my own... so this is great to know that you can change banks, too and get to over 16000 presets that way. Great!

Clap! Clap! Clap! :) 2022 is a great year for software music. Reading about VST3 problems always makes me happy like that. Great that there is a new and open source format for plugins!
