Controlling External Synths

Hi,

I'm just coming back to making music after a good while out of the game and have started to use Waveform, which seems excellent.

I'm struggling, however, to control my external hardware via midi keyboard.

Setup is:

Akai MPK mini controller keyboard

Akai EIE Pro Audio/Midi interface

Modal Electronics Craft Synth 2

Korg Volca Drum

Korg Nano Kontrol 2

So I can get everything set up nicely so that the Akai MPK controls VSTs in Waveform, the nanokontrol controls transport/mixer and audio from the 2 external synths is being recorded into the DAW.

I can't, however, figure out how to get the MPK to control either the Craft Synth or the Volca.

I'm drawing a bit of a blank with Youtube - any pointers as to what I should be doing?

Cheers,

Rich

Trickier question than I thought! :)

Sounds like you have issues with MIDI out from Waveform to the craft boxes.

What MIDI channel is being recognized by the craft boxes? Can you activate them directly from the MPK - presumably not, as there is no direct MIDI out, only usb...

1. Make sure you have nothing in the output section to Process (read steal or block) MIDI from reaching the output. If you have a VST in there, it probably takes MIDI in and audio out. MIDI then will NOT make it to any external MIDI devices, by default. You CAN just DISABLE the VST if you have one, and it will then be ignored, so you can play with both, but remember what/where your OUTPUT from the track needs to go.
2. Assign it to the correct place. On the speaker right of the track, select either default midi or specific midi interface. (or you can set it as part of track properties).
3. Note that the MIDI channel is part of the CLIP properties. If it doesn't match the h/w synth it won't play anything.

It would also be nice if your MIDI interface had a nice little LED that flashed when data flows through... B-) Looks like the AKAI doesn't but maybe the craft boxes do.. ?

Excellent, thanks very much - that seems to have done the trick!
