Granulizer 2 by Inertia Sound Systems is a granular synth that works well for drone
Valhalla Super Massive is a great free delay/reverb that can turn anything into a drone
Sugar Bytes Aparillo can be cool for drone/fx
Arturia Pigments has all the tools needed to create any type of complex drone

I second this... Very easy to make drones with this beast.mgelon wrote: Mon Dec 07, 2020 11:29 pm Valhalla Super Massive is a great free delay/reverb that can turn anything into a drone

Basically all synths that can import samples. For drones I use VPS Avenger, Synthmaster (2.9), Alchemy, Padshop and Iris 2 + some extra TX if needed. Absynth is one beast of a drone generator but the GUI always kept me from using it more often. YMMV.

I just ordered a Dreadbox Typhon because one of the drone presets I heard on YouTube was sublime.

Padspheres - I'm not sure if this is soundscapes or drones, anyway, It's free, donations accepted.

Kaleidoscope fed into B2:
this entire album is made using only that combination:
https://soundcloud.com/andrew_souter/se ... t-official
I also did a bunch of stuff like this for the Tron game and Dead Rising 3 etc as well. (Together with Sonic Mayhem, who was lead composer.)
Very potent combo for all forms of ambient from peaceful "new age planetarium space music" to ominous sci-fi, to downright creepy horror atmospheres...

Beautiful!
So this is Kaleidoscope as a sound source with no midi input? How do you do that?

Yes. No MIDI input.aMUSEd wrote: Mon Dec 14, 2020 12:16 pm Beautiful!

Set KS "White" slider to 200%. This feeds the resonators with white noise, and completely eliminates the input signal. It is then behaving like a synth.
To control tonality, you can work with "Chordal tunings" or "Scale tunings" or "Harmonic Tunings". If you have some music theory knowledge (and you want your result to be tonal), you might know that your track is in C-minor.
* If you use a Minor scale-based tuning you can can feed it any image you like that prodocues a good result. Just keep the Ref Freq set to C.
* If you use chordal tunings, you might pict minor chords with Ref Freq C, F, G, and major chords for Eb, Ab, Bb. And Diminished for D. And/or 4 note chords such as 7ths, etc. If you want to build Chord changes in this manner, bounce on chord at a time with a little overlap, and cross-fade the audio regions.
* If you use some harmonic based tuning, your ref freq can be any note in the scale of C-Min: C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb.
For content:
* For evolving pads, use super long periods for at least one of the two images: In/Out to create things that evolve and morph over 32, 64, whatever measures.
* For ostinatos, arpeggios, etc, use one period that is 1 or 2, or 4 measures long, and use another that is very long such as 16, 32, 64 etc measures to get the same kind of gradual morphing of the the pattern to keep things interesting. Also try polyrhythm techniques.
Then feed the whole thing in a few instances of B2. "Mystical Folder" is great for the drones and pads. Shorter spaces are nice for ostinators, arpeggios, etc. Wave-shaping in B2 is great to add character and aggression if/when desired.
The album above was ONLY KS and B2.
Of course you can get great resulting combining this with standard MIDI synths also. This one is a hybrid of both:

..using early development builds of KS, plus Metasynth, plus verbs, plus standard synths. It's a bit more thematic than the first linked as it has the "human parts" as well as the pure-ambient sound-design etc.
hope it helps...
