Nice. I didn't know about the freebie.
This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

Wonder whether Arturia's new one will get into the ballpark of legendary TAL-Chorus?

Don't need to wonder. Just try it

It sounds different, especially the I+II mode. Not sure which plugin is the most realistic one regarding this combined mode. The Manual mode is the most interesting one imo. Nice Christmas gift. :)

Btw when comparing the two, you might want to turn down the volume of the TAL Chorus a little.

The I + II mode in the TAL Chorus is effectively the sum of both chorus, which creates a super-fat chorus. However, that's not what happens in the original Juno-60, and consequently not what was emulated in the Jun-6 V and now in this Chorus Jun-6.

To obtain the TAL effect, you may pile two Chorus Jun-6 instances, one set for I and the other for II.

It happens I have a real Roland Juno-60, and did the comparisons

@fmr So the Arturia one behaves more in line with the original Juno Chorus basically? This is the first time I hear that the TAL one doesn't behave authetically. :wheee: Somehow such rumours regularly come up whenever there is a new kid on the block. In more than decade of TAL chorus existence no one ever mentioned anything like this. Strange!

Don't take me wrong. I love the TAL Chorus, and I think Patrick did a great job on it. Actually, his TAL U-NO-LX has exactly the same behavior, and I created most of the presets for it (anything with the suffix FMR was programmed by me), and loved that behavior. As a matter of fact, I think that Patrick's option makes a lot of sense.

The original chorus, however, doesn't behave that way. Roland opted to create a preset that has nothing to do with the other two. While in the other two the LFO is in opposite phase between channels (which allows to create a stereo effect out of a mono source) and oscillates at relatively slow speed, in the third preset the LFO oscillates much faster and is not longer in opposite phase between Left and Right. This way, the chorus becomes mono, and the effect has more a vibrato character than a chorus character.

Arturia opted to remain faithful to the original. If you don't believe me (as I said I OWN a real Roland Juno-60) do some research about it. There are sources on the net documenting this.

@fmr No, I actually do believe you. Sorry for coming of distrustful! I guess TAL has made a deliberate decision then, which has some advantages over the original design. I actually favour usability / usefullness over authenticity. I'll eventually try the Arturia after the holidays and see which one is better for my personal usage scenarios.

When set to either I or II mode you can tell that they model the same unit, the overall vibe is pretty similar. TAL's a bit darker sounding and seems to have a wider stereo image. Arturia on the other hand is more on the clean side (though that might be because it retains more of the highs, I didn't go too deep).

The manual mode on Arturia's chorus is a nice touch. I really like this, you can make it go pretty damn wild. It's worth a try even for only this feature.

Anyhow, I'll be happy to use both choruses.

Hmm...

Installed but it's in demo mode. No activation button, just a "buy" button that opens a 404...

So how did you guys activate this?

It's not active in your account yet -- when it is there should be a non-demo version you can install instead.

Sorry for the OT @fmr but out of the two (Arturia/TAL) which one do you find closer to your hardware Juno 60 (regardless the chorus)?

I love TAL for what it is and then I read this topic on gearslutz and this bloke goes absolutely mental on how shite the TAL is (in his opinion) because of the envelopes being poppy sounding just like your typical VST and nothing like the hardware.

I don’t own the hardware and would rather believe someone who does and actually designed presets for TAL. Also people compare it to 106 many times. So would you say Arturia or TAL is more accurate (without the chorus!)?
