It says Diva is allowed.Hard3eat wrote: Sat Jan 02, 2021 1:06 pm There's a lot of things that are not clear in this one...
I already started making something with Diva so if its not goin to be allowed after all thats gonna suck.
Tho I agree that it doesn't really emulate a specific synth.. Plus it has so many different synth modes, filters, envlopes, presets and what not that its waay easier for someone to create a full on track with it..
Maybe if you guys want to use hardware and software this month than just split it into best 'hw' track of the month and best 'sw' track of the month![]()

Re: D-50 - it does have a synth engine, you can use the synth without samples, but then you wouldn't be able to make drums at all unless there's some way to do it via ring modulation or LFOs. I wouldn't completely rule it out as calling it just a ROMpler is actually objectively incorrect.
It's very tasty, I swear!

Perhaps I am wrong in what I am going to say next, but I think that Brian and Richard have a way of running this competition not by imposing their criteria, but rather by hoping that the participants also decide by majority on how to apply the rules.
So I'm going to give an idea about the choice of synth this month. What do you think if each contestant states here which synth they intend to use and that Brian, Richard or even someone with enough knowledge says if it is appropriate or not.
For example, each one notifies here something like:
"I have chosen Synth1 (or whatever synth you decide) to participate this month. If there is any problem please let me know here in this thread. If there is no response in 24 hours, I should understand that I can use Synth1 without problems or limits."
Because publishing a list of allowed synths (both hardware and software) can be a very complex task, given the large number of hardware synths and emulations available both free and commercial.

I'll use either Diva or Repro if it is feasible (my computer is a bit crap, i haven't installed Diva or Repro yet but i've heard that Diva isn't too bad on Bitwig). I haven't decided which Diva or Repro until i begin making the track. Or i might have to use something else for example Synth1.L-EctroBit wrote: Sat Jan 02, 2021 1:50 pm Perhaps I am wrong in what I am going to say next, but I think that Brian and Richard have a way of running this competition not by imposing their criteria, but rather by hoping that the participants also decide by majority on how to apply the rules.

HY sequencers
"Inspired by" Doepfer Darktime, M185 mk2 sequencer by Ryktnk, Analog Solutions EKG, and sequecner part of Roland TB-303.
Is this fair game? I've noticed people using Bitwig's The Grid for sequencing or generative patchs, ergo i think this is fair game in this months contest according to the rules stated on page 1. Correct me if i've misunderstood the rules.
Cheers. peace!

As I understand it, use any hardware synth which is actual hardware. That means a D-50 would be allowed, an M1 would be allowed. Those synths could not sample on their own. If there is a pure emulaton of those that would be fine as well like Korgs M1 or Wavestation. Diva is a special case, as each of its parts is modelled after hardware.
I would love to see Vurt participating with his Euro rack. A VCV patch made only with emulations of hardware modules would be fine then...
I don't think a Grid patch even if it mimics hardware would make sense. For Reaktor it could be different, as there are ready made emulations in the community, but personally I would rather not.
In the end its about the spirit. Anybody who chooses an emulation could restrict herself to skipping all those extra extensions that did not belong to the original. Except polyphony and MPE, as those could have been produced with some extra effort as well with the originals (Remember Wendy Carlos?)
It should remain as challenge in the end...

Ok thank you all for the answers.
For me the D-50 still has a part of a Rompler, because it uses longer Attack-Samples in combination with the Synth-Engine, but it also has full Sound-Editing Features - So I´m still not sure if I would call it a Rompler - I think it´s something on its own?
You can actually make some Sounds that kinda resembles Drums without the PCM-Engine. But you have to cheat with the Hi-Hat Sound and remove every frequency below 3500Hz for it to sound like some cheap fake HiHats. I probably won´t use the D-50, because I already got headache from creating these Sounds. I don´t have a PG-Controller, so I have to edit on the synth itself... And it´s not...well designed. (And also because in my opinion the D-50 Sound is defined by those PCM Samples and I don´t feel comfortable using those in this challenge)
Also I´ve written in the Soundcloud Description how i made the Sound (what my settings were and what I used to process the sound) if there is interest I can also post it here.

Agree about Diva, i was reading about this one in this thread: forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=394222
So possibly i wouldn´t use Diva.
Thinking of Repro 1 as Sequential Pro One emulation.

Well, presumably not anything. A bunch of them aren't hardware emulations as far as I know.
Personally, I was thinking it would be fun to do a month of Bucket Pops, because I'm amused by the idea of turning the old OSC trope of "how do I make a kick/snare with this" on its ear by pressing a drum machine into service as a melodic instrument. As far as I've been able to find, though, the hardware it's based on didn't make all the sound parameters available to be able to modify its sound that way, nor customizable rhythms, nor MIDI triggering of individual notes, so it doesn't really seem in keeping with the hardware/emulation theme to use it that way.

Same question about Ableton's operator, but from a different angle: So does this part of the rules mean operator is OK?jasinski wrote: Sat Jan 02, 2021 12:48 am Quick Check:
I think I’m going to use Ableton’s Operator. It's enough of DX7 emulation that I believe it falls within the bounds of the rules.

Does that apply only to physical workstations or DAWs as well?

So, I started making something with Repro 1 and after 23 instances of it my computer was spitting bricks through the speakers, 13 instances for the drums, one for a bass line, one for the lead, four for a pad and other four for another pad... bouncing tracks every 30 seconds is not fun so I don't know, maybe I'll compose everything using other synths and when all is ready I'll send the tracks through a zillion Repro 1 instances.
