Hi,
Just got into using waveform, so maybe this is just due to the fact im a big noob, but for some reason my midi clips in my timeline aren't getting detected by the mixer. They play with sound normally but the mixer doesn't detect any sound and I can't change the levels or pan, it just doesn't do anything. And when I record an audio clip the mixer detects it all fine. Please help :?
Thanks,
Ged.

Do you have the Vst/ sound source before or after the volume /pan?
It will need to be before volume/pan

So when you play back the song, the MIDI clip's data is passed through an instrument plugin and makes the expected noise but when you open the Mixed it doesn't show anything on the level meters? Also, the pan and volume plugins don't have any effect on the audio coming out of the instrument plugin?

As terrynoakes noted above, what it sounds like you're describing is what happens when the volume/pan plugin and level meter plugin are before the instrument. Those plugins only detect audio.

Surely there must be consensus by now...

Yeah you guys were right it was simply the volume & pan being before! Definetly logical but not at all obvious to put it last, they should probably change it so volume and pan is automatically last or something. Thanks for the help though, life saver!!! :)

One of the quirks of Waveform is its best feature: YOU pick the order of plugins, creating a unique signal flow. Think of your plug ins like connectors, output to input, from left to right. The advantage here is that you can control how the faders work. For example, you can put the meter and fader before and after a compressor to control and measure its effect on a track. You can also move pan where you need it, unlike some DAWs. This is a big benefit to controlling your inputs and outputs, so I can't imagine there will ever be consideration to change it. Once you get the idea, you come to really appreciate it! You're never locked into one way of routing audio or MIDI.

Always think left to right, for Waveform. From input through final output, it's one linear path. For audio, it's pretty simple to conceptualize.

MIDI is the same (unlike many other DAW's...). MIDI notes come in on the left, and you expect audio coming out on the right (normally). INSTRUMENT VST's normally take MIDI input, and output audio. Just think of what you put on the track, and it's logical. Audio (volume, pan, reverb, etc) go AFTER the VST, as they work on the audio output of the VST.

Sequencers, ARP, chord generators, and "midi modifiers" all take MIDI in, modify it, and put it back in the track. Those should normally be BEFORE the Instrument VST.

Volume control (audio) will do nothing on MIDI information (although they see no audio, and do nothing but effectively block MIDI).

If you HAVE a MIDI to Audio Instrument VST, it effectively uses (and doesn't pass through) MIDI, so when you try to output that MIDI track to an external synth it doesn't go anywhere (unless you remove or DISABLE the on-track VST which would permit the MIDI output to your hardware synth.
