Best practice for slicing / mapping / retriggering / repitching breakbeats?

There's a loop that contains kick, snare, etc and I'd like to trigger each with a separate key along with some basic enveloping to avoid pops, and have an mDrummer drum scratch module to do some basic kickrubs and scratching to get a fairly simple breakbeat kit up and going quickly from any loop.

I'm thinking MPowerSynth maybe since it's more geared toward region mapping, so I could get say an octave of retuned kicks, an octave of retuned snares, then maybe map a few variations of the scratcher for quick single trigger use.

Looking at mSoundFactory now, and not sure what the easiest way is to grab multiple slices from the same loop so each slice is mapped to it's own octave on the keyboard. Is there some semi-automated way of doing this?

It would be cool if Melda had a plugin that worked like VICE https://www.newsonicarts.com/html/vice.php

Yes, I would love to see Melda get into the sample chopping/audio editing game.

One day definitely!

I third that emotion. I haven't used Vice, but I've used most of the rest of them. It would be preferable to keep it in the same ecosystem with mDrummer, be able to auto add slices to the mDrummer data file, store them as mDrummer kits, etc.

I've got a few of the other Regroover type tools, but it's been a few years since I searched for one. Looks like Vice was out then, so not sure how I missed it.

Overall, it looks the most like the one I'd design if I were choosing my own features, so I may have to buy it.

For any users:

1) Is it all just slice based, or does it do any kind of flex timing to correct for gaps, etc if you rearrange slices or quantize? I see that it automatically cuts at zero crossing, but when doing this stuff by hand, I've generally resigned myself to flex quantizing the loop first, then making my slices so no matter how it's rearranged, everything lines up with no gaps.

2) How does the saving work? If I've got something all sliced up, custom adjusted slices, fadeout times, filters per slice, etc does all that save with the patch?

If not, in Logic, I suppose I could always save the MIDI file as an Apple Loop which should then call up the saved state of the plugin along with whatever MIDI I've got which could include only the slices I want to use.

Just trying to be as efficient as possible these days about creating reusable templates. Anyone got any notes on the save/recall process if you decide you liked what you did with particular slices in another song?

As for doing a Melda version, this certainly looks like the one to start with as a feature set. The ability to name and categorize slices that could be easily shared between mDrummer, mSoundFactory, etc would be super useful. Would be really nice to quickly and easily create something like a 60's jazz breakbeat snare collection simply within the natural course of trying out a few grooves without making much of an extra effort to do so.

I've always found the separate ecosystems of various drum tools to be a real drag. Hell, just going from Battery 3 to Battery 4 ruined my whole month when none of my previous projects, templates, etc would load correctly.

A slicer module for MDrummer would be  :hyper:

May I ask what these slicer tools are for, in a nutshell? I usually just do everything on the timeline. Though I bought a license for Renoise, its routing options are not good, imo. I've been thinking about getting Redux but still not sure. The answer to this might be obvious but I'm not getting why you people are excited about this (but I'd like to know). Thanks.

For me at least it would mean I could slice up a drum loop, extract that midi groove into MDrummers pattern machines
and layer them with MDrummer internal kits.

Ok. I'll come back once I've raised my drums game. Thanks.
