Move Tracktion's GUI to external monitor?

Hi,

I've tried Tracktion a while ago and I really liked what I saw. I only had one tiny problem - which would make Tracktion impossible to use in my case.

Here's why: I use my laptop for making music, but I have connected an external monitor and an external keyboard to it to keep the laptop away from my immediate working area - it produces significant fan noise.

The problem is, I can't figure out how to move Tracktion's GUI to my external monitor (which works as a desktop extension). I can do it with every other app, but due to Tracktion's genuine window design, it doesn't work the usual way.

Who can help?

Thanks a lot,

Nope, you've pretty much gotten it right-- it's nearly impossible to do right now.

Unless your driver gives you the option to set the external monitor as "primary", you're screwed. Go to your Display Properties, select the "settings" tab, and near the bottom there's a check box for "use this monitor as primary" or something like that. If you can't do this with your external monitor, you're doomed.

As an interesting side note, though-- if your video card allows it (Matrox G550 does!), you can use 2 monitors as if they were 1 monitor, giving 2-screen capability to Tracktion.

I don't use this; however, since it's a clunky divide down the middle and the resizing doesn't make efficient use of real-estate. Thankfully I can put VST in the other monitor. :D I'm sure T2 will address multiple monitor support. OK, not sure... but I'm hoping.

Can you not do it using Tackywrapper?

Not that i've tried, but I don't see why you couldn't ...

[edit]
Tackywrapper is, of course, by ModuLR, and is available on his rather groovy webby here;

If you can, I've not figured it out. You can't resize Tackywrapper or click and drag it, unless I have an outdated version.

perhaps virtuawin might work, if you assign it to the proper monitor virtual desktop?

Not terribly helpful as I can't remember details, but about the time I started using Tracktion (~18 months ago) I remember someone mentioning that they had successfully used some utility to do this. If KvR's archives go that far back it might be worth searching for.

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but it's a pretty cool little utility. I can't run two monitors, but I can turn my monitor into two "pages" I guess you'd call it. One shows Tracktion until I hit the arrow--then it flips to the second "page" where I can have my VSTs open. Here's a quote from the readme.txt:

DoubleDesktop is a clever and easy to use utility that effectively doubles the width of Windows desktop. If you are tired of your desktop being cluttered with lots of windows from different
applications, this utility is for you!

DoubleDesktop installs a small arrow icon on Windows Tray. With a single mouse click on that icon or a keystroke you can switch between "left" and "right" parts of the desktop. This way you can easily rearrange all your application windows between the two desktop parts.

To move a window from "left" part of the desktop to the "right" and vice versa, simply drag the window beyond right or left screen boundaries and then switch the desktop."

That last paragraph about draging a window simply means you drag a VST off to the right of Tracktion (for example) until it's almost gone. When you switch to the other page, the VST will be there for you to drag all the way on. It works perfectly and really frees up the Tracktion view.

Hope this helps. Oh--Google it.

And now that I've read the original question again, I see this won't work for you! But someone might find it useful

spooky, i found this app just last week - not a replacement for "real" dual monitors but great with t, have purely t on first screen and all your vsts locked open on the other. smart.
