I purchased auto-volume after a quick demo for the purpose of slightly ducking the rhythm guitar tracks during vocal parts. I didn't want compression, just a simple tool to avoid having to do tons of automation in the tracks. Seemed to do the job. However, on my latest project, it will work for a some number of seconds and then just start producing noise that continues even after I stop playback.
I have the following config in the plug-in:
General: all at zero, sensitivity at 50%
Advanced: range +24, speed 50, noice floor 40, noise gate enabled, speed mode Fast
Side Chain: Ducking enabled BG sensitivity 10%, gain 0 and fast 0
Detector: HP 0.71 listen options NOT selected
The side chain input DB depends on the vocal track and I can increase the send gain to modify the ducking which works, but like I said, after some number of playback seconds it just starts oscillating.
Is this a bug or am I using this wrong?

What sort of noise? White noise? If you started with a Demo, you may need to authorize it. Melda plugs spit out white noise every now and then if they're not...

Post

It is authorized. The output just pegs with a warbling sound. It starts normal, then starts injecting some of the noise and then pegs and stays pegged even when playback is stopped.

I am going to try using it in Studio One 5 vs. Cakewalk and see if the DAW is related. What is strange is that it seems to be functioning in one composition and when I went to use the preset and tweak it in another this occurred. Assumed it was an audio interface issue, so booted, switched interfaces (I have two) and it just returns the minute you start playback. Very odd.

I did upgrade to the latest version.

Maybe it's related to the newer "sleep on silence" setting? I'll see if I can replicate it on mine...

Post

Nope that's not it. I'm on S1 Pro v4.6 Win10 and I can't seem to break it...

Do you have a demo of other vst that probably is making the noise? Is your guitar track clean? Or it has some noise? It has a delay active that is keeping the sound even at stop? Do you have some plugin like Waves with "analog" button active? Those make noise all the time, and MAutoVolume is probably detectecting noise and doing his magic with it. I use MAutoVolume on all my mixes and haven't got any issue like that, going to test your settings, but all depends on the source and parameters that you're using!

Thanks for the replies. Like I said, I will test in a clean project in studio one. When you guys say you use it, do you use Ducking? This is the only thing that causes the behavior. No other un-authorized plug-ins being used.

Post

Yes, I tested on my system using it as a side-chain. I typically only use MAutoVolume for leveling. I prefer MSpectralDynamics or MAutoDynamicEQ the the side-chain ducking duties.

And to be clear, I wasn't accusing you of using unauthorized plugins. I've had to chase down the white noise before (a PITA) and was surprised to find was a Melda plugin. I simply had to re-authorize it. I forget the exact circumstances now, maybe upgrading to a bundle? I've also demoed one before, forgot about it, then had to hunt down the source of the white noise... :)

I use the MCompressor (the normal one) to compress the Mid side via sidechain on some keyboards and stuff to give space to the vocals on the center, it works great! :) sometimes the MSpectral pan works amazing when is used to pan things when other things appear in the mix.

Post

Yeah mcompressor definitely works fine for this. And no 'accusations' assumed from me :) We demo a lot of stuff and then don't buy it so it IS a possible scenario. But this issue effects the ENTIRE mix which starts oscillating like crazy until the meters are pegged. Disable the autovolume plugin and it immediately stops.

I had something similar on a mix and it was Izotope's Stutter Edit that added some weird delayed sound that was growing until I had to disable the last fx used with it, check if you have a delay on something, or which channel is the one who makes the sound, if doesn't work try turning off and on on the automation on that song so you don't loose your time searching for that noise hehe! And hope this isn't an issue with MAutoVolume
