I'm with rokkon, I couldn't care less if development stops - it does everything I need, and a shitload of things I don't, now so until it becomes incompatible with newer OS's, I'll be fine. Anyway, I'm sure the creator is out hatching something new and better.

No, well, I agree that it's a lot better than WMP 9 and I *do* use WMP 10 from time to time - especially when I'm going to put on a playlist to listen to in the other room (while cooking, etc), but I still do use Winamp for more of my music listening. I'm hoping WMP will get even a little lighter, and a bit more user friendly - something things are hard to find etc.

The thing I do love about WMP is that I can rip CD's with it and then burn to a disc for the car - and with WMP 10 it can rip to MP3 now. Media Player is integrated into Windows so I'd rather use this for ripping and burning becuase it means I have less software I have to install on my machine to do these 2 things.

I don't think Winamp is going to go anywhere - I use v5.05 now and love it and I haven't found any bugs or problems with it (I never do). If developements stops I'm sure plenty of people will still continue to use it anyway.

Lately, I've been wishing for an improvement to be made to Winamp. Now, I guess it's certain that it will never happen, instead of just being almost certain to never happen. :(

You see everytime Winamp starts playing a song, it automatically mutes all the incoming channels of my audio interface, and it also sends some sort of MIDI signal out to my synth which shuts down the synth's ability to transmit data MIDI into my computer. I'm getting pretty tired of reseting all the audio and MIDI settings, just because I played an MP3 or something. As far as I'm concerned, Winamp should just play the darn MP3 and not worry about resetting all the audio and MIDI ports on my system.

That said, I will miss Winamp when it eventually disappears. (Perhaps made intentionally incompatible in the next version of Windows?) It was still my favorite player.

I'm still happy with Winamp 2.90! 8)

5.05 works fine for me - no further development needed for me

as long as it doesn`t dissapear
i hope other audio apps do not make their "open file" button smaller and smaller and work it away untill it dissapears so the web becomes one big controlled broadcast medium.

(take a look at the latest windows media player)

Yeah I love Winamp and am not that fussed if it doesn't go further. It's pretty perfect already.

Anyway - this doesn't mean that nifty little plug-ins aren't still going to be developed. Weren't they 3rd party?

this could suck, for one reason that was mentioned above by a savvy somebody: Microsoft intentionally working some incompatibility in to the next "service pack ;)" , knowing that it won't be fixed. If that happens, I hope that everyone will join me in switching en masse to Sonique 2 - which despite a few bugs, is one of the most innovative players out there. I may even learn their Mantis markup language as it seems pretty powerful for GUI work.
Anyway, I kind of hope that winamp sticks around. Maybe it will become open-source?? or maybe I am on cough syrup again... :drunk:

I use 2.97. The newer versions haven't gotten any better (for me) so I see no need to update.

I think WMP is great for porn.

otherwise I'm having a hard time trying to think of life without winamp...

Looks cool! I'll admit it's one of the things that do make me use WMP10 - when it's minimized you get controls in the taskbar - of course WMP9 did this too but it was clunky and didn't fit in the taskbar right - WMP10 fits perfectly.

Luckily there aren't any showstopper bugs in winamp 5.05. Seems like most bugs are plugin related and there's a jungle of them out there. Takes a while to customize it to perfection, but it can be done.

Future development seems to be in the hands of plugin coders, and that's not always a bad thing.

What other player decodes mp3 (the mad plugin variants) and ogg straight to 24bits with increased resolution and fidelity? What other player has the perfect ASIO output plug the resample output to 96khz with even more increased fidelity.

That's right. :D

if you just want to play the bloody things (like me) then check out 1by1, a massive 55kb download though... :)

Just a simple explorer like window, click the first

file you want to play and it carries on through the folder, no need for playlists or any of that malarky (though available if you want...)

Great for auditioning samples too.

(oh yeah, sad about winamp, though mainly for nostalgic reasons)
