What Filter do you use ?

I bought volcano a few years back but never used it. I dont think it's value for what it is. A filter's a filter, you dont need to spend big $$$ on them. The differences are so minimal, especially tone.
If you already got a stock filter with basic slopes and drive on then that's all you need.
I got the soundtoys filter freak and has modulation capabilities as does volcano but the sound is very similar to my stock ableton, the only major difference is the resonance squeals a bit more and this is supposed to be one of the best on the market. It's basically the same shit. How often will you need to modulate like crazy in volcano or something like that? Not very. And if you do, it's easier in your daw.

In short, save ya money!

Tell that to somebody like Leonardo Laguna Ruiz (https://www.vult-dsp.com), who builds different filter types on breadboards and then circuit models them with top notch DSP.

There are a dozen of them and the differences are substantial.

But if someones says that all you need is some drive , different slopes and a bit of higher rensonance peaks ( like Kinh states ) it just makes me laugh , and nothing to back up his claims
Filterfreak was good 10-15 years ago , the post filter analogue saturation is also good but it does not have the non linearities that are present in top notch ZDF filters like the drop and vadim zavalishin's filters , u-he etc... ...and fabfilter is a a joke
Fabfilter one was pretty good when it was released in 2003 , so was volcano , bought it immediatly back then but things have changed and fabfilter's dsp code is still pretty old ( no zdf whatsoever ) .
So no , you don't just need a bit of drive and resoance peaks .

Yep, the non-linearities are where most of the joy lies for me, subtly modulating around them

The A-108, Korgasmatron II and Model 72 filters in STM are all lovely filters, but if you just want to filter something and want to use a modular VST for that then, as I have said above, I would argue that it is cheaper and better to go with the Vult filters hosted in Voltage Modular. There is far greater variation and they sound better to my ears, so much so that I bought his Euro module Freak (which has almost all the filters and LPGs), even though it is digital.

Sounds like you just answered your own question... Fabfilter Simplon. Same filters, cheaper, light on CPU, and lacking all the modulation. I rarely need all that modulation myself, so I use Simplon far more than Volcano.

Sounds like you just answered your own question... Fabfilter Simplon. Same filters, cheaper, light on CPU, and lacking all the modulation. I rarely need all that modulation myself, so I use Simplon far more than Volcano.

Simplon has 3 filter types per filter, Volcano has 10?

I own Volcano 2 too, but never actually used it. Waiting for V3.

Afaik speeds got increased and routing allows for both serial and parallel.
