The filter topologies we have put in there simply don't do that. If we add it, we have to process filter 1 & 2 separately, losing advantage of SSE/NEON instructions and thus doubling the CPU for filters.fgimian wrote: Sat Jan 30, 2021 12:16 pm I'm just going to ask this again ... 24 db/oct BPF and HPF ... pretty please?

Aah no worries, thanks for clarifying mate. I was hoping it wouldn't be so much of a hassle since we already have a 24 db/oct LPF.Urs wrote: Sat Jan 30, 2021 12:23 pmThe filter topologies we have put in there simply don't do that. To echo previous posts related to potential new synthesis types, I believe it would be a pretty risky choice.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love seeing new features in a synth I love. But Hive's goal has always been to maintain a fragile balance between sound quality, CPU usage, clear layout and fast workflow. By loosing sight of this goal, Hive would loose what is in my opinion its biggest strength and have a harder time to compete with the quantity of subtractive/wavetable synths which are already flooding the market.
Another thing worth mentioning is that even if substractive/wavetable synths like DUNE, Serum or Pigments can handle FM synthesis; sounds and algorithms are still more limited than what you would find in dedicated FM synths. Rather than ending up with a gimmick in Hive, it could be interesting to create a dedicated FM synth which shares Hive's strong suits (especially Workflow, CPU usage and the scope to see carrier/modulator interactions). I would love to see a u-he synth of this kind challenge last decade's well established FM synths (FM8, Sytrus, Operator, Rhino) since the new FM generation (Aparillo, Nemesis, DX7 V) does not have as much traction and Bazille is not a direct competitor (I would actually oppose it to Aalto or the Tangle).
-In term of sound palette, is it significantly different to Sytrus or other FM oriented synths?
-I have heard that Bazille's architecture favour long experimentations. Can it also handle a faster and more straightforward workflow or is it not its strong suit?
-Do you consider Bazille as a replacement or a complement to other FM synths?
As a side note, I wonder if Urs has ever considered making an additive synth. Just like FM synths, I do not have the feeling that many major additive synths emerge frequently and the big names I see on forums refer to 10 years old synths; mainly Razor, Harmor, Morphine and Alchemy. Unfortunately, most of them have features which can only be used in specific DAWs (native legato, portamento and modulations in FL studio or basically everything for Alchemy as it is part of Reason).

I guess Bazille's semi-modular architecture and CPU usage make it different than standard FM synths. I am personally on the fence with it but I do not know what to expect from modular synths and am not past Bazille's initial learning curve.MitchK1989 wrote: Fri Jan 29, 2021 11:54 pmAt the risk of going off-topic, you should really check out bazille - it's basically a modular version of a 4 op FM synth melded with a casio CZ series.octaveup wrote: Thu Jan 28, 2021 11:54 pm
- which isn't to say that i wouldn't probably die of happiness of u-He created a focussed FM synth, but just that it doesn't have to be Hive?

Yes, it is significantly different from the DX style FM synths...Miralis wrote: Sat Jan 30, 2021 11:14 pm

Bazille can handle a faster more straightforward workflow if you create a few template presets.
More compliment than replacement, though it can do lots of FM sounds like other FM synths. It can also be a fine subtractive synth.
Bazille has amazing sound quality.

That's basically what i'm talking about. I never owned a Nord but i know this design from Discovery VSTi, and i've heard the Nord FM in numerous psytrance tracks.anoise wrote: Fri Jan 29, 2021 9:49 pm+1 Just like in the Nord Lead. One knob for FM and Sync/Ring mod. Looks simple, don't know how hard it is to implement. Then in Hive you could do FM between 2 wavetables, and/or between main osc and sub osc.recursive one wrote: Fri Jan 29, 2021 4:01 pm Osc sync, simple 2-osc FM and a vowel filter would probably make Hive 2 cover about 95% of my synth needs.
That's the thing, it's much simpler than a dedicated FM synth but sounds very cool.
I understand, there are legitimate reasons why this is not going to happen in Hive though.
And indeed Bazille sounds amazing and i use it quite a bit for psy FM kind of stuff.
You may think you can fly ... but you better not try

Silly me. It completely slipped my mind.
Now that I think about it, Zebra can also handle FM synthesis. It may definitely be what Hive users are looking for, especially considering that Hive is some kind of milestone for the Zebra 3 update.

Though, I have to be honest and say that the FM implementation in Zebra 2 always left me wanting more. I want the ability to FM any oscillator with any other, rather than have a limited selection. Check out Serum, Vital and Phase Plant for my favourite implementations of this.Miralis wrote: Sun Jan 31, 2021 9:47 amSilly me. It completely slipped my mind.

I think Serum is extremely popular for really aggressive sounds for a reason, and imho it does FM better than Vital too.
But I digress, that's more of a FR for Zebra 3

Incredibly cool new features. Hive is maturing beautifully.

Search for spectroblend (you won't see the word "additive" but should see the word "harmonics"carrieres wrote: Sun Jan 31, 2021 12:38 pmI don't find in the Zebra2 manual the word additive ...
Can you show me the right direction ?
