DUNE 3 is now available!!

I hear your point Bones, however a synth with a center screen design like Sylenth, Dune, and Hive makes perfect sense to my workflow.. I just click with this way.. case in point the new skin for Hive2.1 looks stunning but in a way its still really confusing.. anyway each to his own..BONES wrote: Mon Feb 01, 2021 12:57 am For me it's just one more thing to add to the list of reasons I never think to reach for DUNE. But if I was only allowed to make one suggestion, it wouldn't be that. I'd rather see improvements in the workflow, like getting rid of the centre "display", putting the ARP down the bottom with the keyboard, FX,LFO and MSEGs and improving the way oscillators are displayed. It won't happen, though.48, really - (2 ADSR + 4 MSEG) x 8 layers. Or are the MSEGs shared between layers? Either way, it still serves to reinforce my point that if it's not enough, it would be nice to know why.

DUNE 3.4Dasheesh wrote: Sat Jan 30, 2021 1:02 pm well... as soon as i praised the new gui i discovered the vst3 version loads funny in reaper anyway. it doesn't work.
Fixing display problems (VST3)
HiDPI COMPATIBILITY MODES
DAW: Reaper 6 (build 19)
OS: Windows 7 and 10 (64)
Reaper's graphical problems and possible solutions are in the public domain and within the application itself. Here I post one of the ones that I have used successfully, in this case to solve problems with Synapse - Audio Dune 3.4 and other plugins in Windows 7 and 10 64 bits.
Some Reaper HiDPI modes in Advanced UI / system settings may cause graphical issues with DUNE 3.4 GUI (check video) This only happens when modifying the Scaling-Mode custom text on Windows 7 and 10 computers from its value of 100% by default. In my case at 125% and 150% (check video)
Check in the video the modes did not present problems with DUNE 3.4 . It is recommended to use the Reaper HiDPI compatibility mode to fix those issues when changing skin and size.
The HiDPI mode seem to work fine to both floating and windowed.

The big problem with it in DUNE is it's just one of several places where layers of GUI are stacked up. I quite like the way Viper works, although I thought I wouldn't. There is one part of the GUI where you get an overview of all the settings and you use that to get at each group of controls, which are displayed to the right of that. It works really well and feels a lot less ad hoc than DUNE. There is no reason DUNE couldn't just use the display for global settings and patch-related things, with the other bits moving to the bottom with the FX and stuff. That way the display could be made smaller, making more room for the oscillator controls, which feel a bit crowded in D2/D3.surreal wrote: Mon Feb 01, 2021 4:38 amhowever a synth with a center screen design like Sylenth, Dune, and Hive makes perfect sense to my workflow.

Not on the computer, but on 99% of the synths either the mouse wheel or the arrow keys move you through lists.dermage wrote: Mon Feb 01, 2021 12:59 am If we're talking about feature requests:
a better wavetable browser would be great. Just a bit cumbersome to always have to click and select the wcavetable from the drop down list.
As a matter of fact I never drag values on knobs and faders either, I prefer to use the mouse wheel on a logitech mx master II in undented mode.

One note about the installation of Dune 3.4, since it has come up a few times.
The new PC+Mac installers in v3.4 allow you to select the components you want to install. This has been requested by many users in the past, and is certainly a nice improvement. You can choose whether you want to install VST2, VST3, AU, AAX, and whether you want to install the NKS library or not.
There is a caveat here though. If you install on top of v3.2 and de-select the VST2 component, you will obviously end up with a mix of v3.2 and v3.4. This will cause error messages later, since the factory library is v3.4. So make sure to perform a full installation, overwriting the previous VST2.
You can always check the exact version you have installed by clicking on the DUNE logo in the middle. If it reads v3.2 somewhere, run the installer again and perform a full install.

Ok, you may have a point (in one way), BUT ....
How exactly is my request for adding more ADSR envelopes any different than the usual request for a new (proper) preset browser (made by others and, IIRC, you as well) - in terms of relevance?
Having a proper preset browser has been a standard in VST plugins for a looong time, but so is having more than two ADSR envelopes (when it comes to synths).
None of us really "needs" a better preset browser or more ADSR envelopes (the way we need air, water, food, shelter and such), but I really can't see how my request is sillier than yours.
You are "louder" than me (in an online kind of way), so that makes you more right than me?!
Is that it (come on, don't tell me that's what it is)?
Nah, Rich doesn't give a flying f**k about my requests (and, as far as I can see, about the 90+% of requests made by other users as well).BONES wrote: Sun Jan 31, 2021 10:53 pm .... because I reckon you'll have a better chance of getting that than more envelopes. It's more likely to pique Rich's interest, I think.
I'm not a kid so I won't waste my time pulling his sleeve for attention (he does his his thing and I have my like/dislike relation to one of his synths - that's what it is, not the end of the world by any means).

We understand everybody wants their wishes implemented. Realistically though, we cannot implement every single wish out there. Some, perhaps even most wishes take weeks or months to implement, if we tried to we would never be able to release anything. Also while some wishes make sense on the surface, looking into it deeper reveals other issues or conflicts the user did not have on the radar (and sometimes cannot have on the radar, not being able to see the codebase).

I should also point out that when it comes to DUNE specifically, it was and is largely a user-driven project.
The whole idea to make DUNE 1 in the first place goes back to Kriminal. Its UI back then was largely made by BONES and Coramel. The key concept introduced in DUNE 2 (making it a true multi-layered beast), also goes back to a user suggestion. The dual filter added in DUNE 3 was requested by many users, almost everything related to Wavetable handling+editing is also based on user feedback. Wav playback added in 3.4 was also a user suggestion, etc. etc.

The potential behind DUNE synthesis resources, even before this update, is a challenge to the imagination and at the same time a master key to free it beyond any limit. Now with the new features in 3.4 I think the power increased even more.
The online description of Millennium Falcon in Star War comes to my mind as a "warp" throttle.
"Despite her humble origins and shabby exterior, the Millennium Falcon has played a role in some of the greatest victories of the Rebel Alliance and the New Republic. The Falcon looks like a worn-out junker, but beneath her hull she's full of surprises. "
And although DUNE looks "better" than the Falcon, both have the same winning range!

"User-driven" is a good thing only when users do not affect interface decisions. Most people know what they want conceptually, but absolutely do not understand how to implement it in the usable interface. For example, there is a big difference between a beginner and an experienced designer. A beginner has a lot of ideas but most of them don't work in real life or just turn out to be unusable in practice while an experienced designer has fewer ideas that really work and handy in real-life interfaces.Richard_Synapse wrote: Mon Feb 01, 2021 10:05 am I should also point out that when it comes to DUNE specifically, it was and is largely a user-driven project.
I mean it's worth listening to people, but don't let them decide how the problem will be solved. people with no experience in interface design may think they know what they want, but as soon as they start using their own interface, it becomes clear that this is not what they imagined.
You're a brilliant developer but Dune has many UX problems. There is a feeling that everything is implemented in the most straightforward way.

True. This also happens with other suggestions than interface design. We implement it in an experimental version, only to discover a major showstopper we had not seen coming. On the surface almost every idea makes sense, it is not always that simple though in practice.Dombaeb wrote: Mon Feb 01, 2021 11:01 am I mean it's worth listening to people, but don't let them decide how the problem will be solved. people with no experience in interface design may think they know what they want, but as soon as they start using their own interface, it becomes clear that this is not what they imagined.

there is no need, or want for dual filters in an 8 layer unpteen thousand oscillator synth and i will be forever grumpy about that, but so it is. ill live with it. i've got it down to four instruments and sample drums on my travel machine and dune3 is one of them.
