Been a bit in lazy reflective writing mode recently. Here's a jaunty little number. Long beginning bit is slightly ripped off a little bit of a nod to 'Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me', with the background crowd noise, mebbe...

Sounds a bit sad. Not sure why.

Merciless minor key manipulation, old timey piano with wobble, soft-ish crooning, big dollop o' reverb...was never going to be a floor filler..

Beautifully restrained in every way...the harmonic pace, melodic flow, subdued piano timbre etc...loved it!
Vocal sections - they definitely work and are highly appropriate, but i think the piece would've maybe also been very effective without?

Very nice .really like the vocal. Maybe you could increase the velocity of the piano notes in the last verse for a bit more emotional effect.

About time I heard something new from you. Anyway, this was totally unexpected. If I tried to pull of something like this it would sound so bad, dogs would start howling. But you pulled it off perfectly.
Minor nit pick. IMO, piano could use just a touch of EQ cut somewhere around 400. But that's just personal taste on my part.
FYI, this is the only piece of music I've listened to all day outside of my exercise CD.

Thanks all for listening and the useful comments. New version up now (same link at the top) with more velocity scaling on the piano (also nicely varied the vibrato depth and rate a bit more, which I have linked to volume.. ), so there's a bit more of a lift at the end, plus a bit of vocal automation to compensate. Also a leeetle scoop (nothing too much) in the lower mids, which hopefully makes it a bit clearer without sacrificing the 'body' of the piano.

Indeed, I always like the music to stand up on its own as far as possible without the vocals, but sometimes get it horrendously overdone- luckily not too much going on here..ChameleonMusic wrote: ↑Sun Feb 14, 2021 12:19 pm

I've still got loads of bits left over from writing this. As usual it started life as something completely different, on guitar (128bpm shoegazer strumming on electric.. P) then I decided to totally change it, and recorded it again on the (ahem) 'You Rock' midi guitar, and spent ages editing it. Long and short is that I might go back later on and do some kind of extended all instrumental version..I'll see!

I think you've achieved a little more clarity without losing any of the warmth - nice tweak!donkey tugger wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2021 10:39 pm Thanks all for listening and the useful comments. I can definitely hear it working with a small, silky smooth string ensemble behind the piano!donkey tugger wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2021 10:46 pmIndeed, I always like the music to stand up on its own as far as possible without the vocals, but sometimes get it horrendously overdone- luckily not too much going on here..ChameleonMusic wrote: ↑Sun Feb 14, 2021 12:19 pm

As a piece of minimalist songwriting, this is an object lesson to budding artists everywhere. I think the vocal works really well with that piano.
This certainly reminded me of Peter Gabriel from the "good old days".

Cheers. This 'minimalism' lark is harder than it seems! Always having to resist the temptation to lob in some more stuff..
I've got one more I'm doing - some 6 minute plus acoustic guitar thing at about 50bpm..very difficult.. After that I think it will be a bit of metel/punk for a change.

Really minimalistic and melancholy. Above all: it slows you down!
For people with high blood pressure we should recommend this song.
But seriously: Well done! You dared to make a song like that.
Singing: Wonderful!
