dellboy wrote: Fri Feb 26, 2021 3:32 pm I just tried a half dozen or so at random and gave up.

It all sounded like someone randomly pressing keys in Omnisphere or something.

You have heard one and you have heard it all.
The Autechre, Clark, and Ochre tracks are objectively distinct from each other sonically (new tracks to me).
There are many objectively distinct tracks in this list. And it's a random list I could think about on the spot. Many others could be made with even more diverse styles. My point is, if we look around, contemporary electronic music has an amazing range of styles and sounds far removed from what Dasheesh was alluding to. The fact that some of it will be similar from artist to artist is a by-product of the sheer amount of people making music and the ease of exposure.

In the 1970s we had a few lucky people sitting in their garages with a select few synths, making music in total seclusion. So of course, unique styles were developed. But now we have almost every person with a computer or an iPad making tracks that are posted online the second the render process has been completed in the DAW. So there is more of everything, more of the same, but amongst this sheer volume of music there are examples of very diverse and unique styles. Sure, if all you listen to is EDM and Dubstep then god help you. You are right, it's all homogenised. But venture out and seek out electronic music genres that are less based on 'club' genres and you will find amazing new music. Omnisphere my omni-arse....What a joke @dellboy.:D

It's evident that electronic music is not your thing.

Sounds like a good title for your next concept album.

The Floyd/Rush prog rock sounds (I remember being only in to guitar and then hearing 'Tom Sawyer' by Rush (probably an OBX or 8 voice SEM) ....the FM DX7 sound in Funk/Soul, Wavetable/LFO and the massively produced Dubstep stuff (which sounded at least new/modern to me). Seems a few of you have said there hasn't been any really new distinctive 'sound'/production style since Dubstep...
It's an interesting point, that of 'new production styles'. Does it mean that we desire new production styles and new sounds all the time? That to be content when listening to any new music it has to embody some new, fancy techniques and tricks in order for us to feel justified in selecting whatever track we are listening to? If the answer is 'yes', than it's a real shame. It is a shame since personally, I'd hope that 'Music' has enough room and time&space to breathe/live without people demanding some new revolutionary production techniques all the time. This is also one of the reasons why I like emulations of vintage synths and maybe even old-school electronic music, since it does not need to rely on anything 'new', be it new 'sound' or 'new production techniques'. It can simply be based on musicality and your assessment whether the music moves you or not. And I don't think this part, that of your emotional response to music is exclusively based on a continuous flow of new sounds and new techniques or new synthesis methods.

And once it's made I will give the single copy of that concept album to you. As a learning tool on how to appreciate a diverse range of music without the help of Omnisphere.. :D :ud:

My only real use for synthesis is for 'new sounds', otherwise I may as well just use samples of other peoples sounds.

There's an old saying about trying to teach a pig to sing

Hmmmmm....maybe that would be a good concept for a new form of synthesis  :hihi:

the pigano 88 pigs, 88 hammers attached to the keys, striking the tails

will need different sized pigs for each key to adjust the squeal tuning (can use cats for higher registers cows for lower maybe?)

Do you mean that when you desire say, a classic Minimog-style bass, you choose a sample over making it yourself in a suitable synth that can make such a sound?
