Any recommendations on a good free VST guitar amp modeler

I am trying to find a good sounding VST amp modeler to apply to a clean guitar digital audio track. Looking for a high gain/distortion, grunge rock sound, but can't seem to get the sound by applying the built in filters- I'm starting to think I should have used a mic to record the sound out of my amp, rather than recording it clean. Any thought on best way to record digital audio guitar tracks in Tracktion. Ideas and tips would be greatly appreciated.

Amplitude rules but it's not free or cheap. Search the KVR site(instruments/effects/hosts/etc link on the left), i'm sure there's something free out there.
The best way to get a good guitar sound going in is to mic (SM57) your amp close and center (also experiment with mic placement for the sound you want). That being said, I get pretty good sounds going direct using my BOSS GT-3 effects processor or POD. Many times i end up doubling or tripling parts using both methods, then mixing. Just go for that sound in your head or the one that fits.

You get what you pay for in this case. If you are doing line in guiat recording without a mic or amp, this is the best and cheapest solution:

Green Machine II is wonderful, but it's not free. I believe it's 89 Euro, which is still a bargain compared to Amplitube.
GuitarPort seems like an excellent budget solution. I'm probably going to eventually go for either that or a J-station off ebay.
Mic'ing your amp is a good solution, too, as long as you're willing to commit to the tone you've dialed in, and you are able to record it well.

I just got guitarport 2 weeks ago. I gotta say, I'm pretty blown away with it (ver 2.5). It's a fantastic bargain at $90.00us. Sounds awesome. Of course at least half the presets are crap, but the amp models themselves are outstanding.
Yeah, I wish it was a VST plug-in, but for 90 dollars, I'll deal with it like this.

maybe even better than miking is to use a DI box with a built-in speaker sim. Behringer sells a pretty good one for dirt cheap (Ultra-G? Ultra DI? something linke that).
In terms of VST plugins, Guitar shop isn't for free, but dirt cheap and capable of some good sounds....

I can't believe no one has mentioned Simulanalog. It is a suite of vst plugin with amplifiers and analog processors for guitarists, actually containing the simulation of:
- Boss DS-1 (Distortion stompbox)
- Boss SD-1 (Super Overdrive stompbox)
- Tube Screamer (Overdrive stompbox)
- Oberheim PS-1 (Phaser stompbox)
- Univox Univibe (Modulations stompbox)
- Fender Twin 1969 (Guitar amplifier)
- Marshall JCM900 Dual Reverb (Guitar amplifier)
It is non-commercial (it's an academic project) so you know they actually tried to model the amps and effects completely. The Marshall JCM900 sounds very grungy on channel B.

Very good set of VST, those. Most guitarists have them in their arsenal.
I'm not a big fan, but that doesn't mean they're not great, it just means they're not to my taste.
