Been saying this for ages. 16 pages of discussion on absolutely nothing :dog:
I wonder what happens if I press this button...

The dongle was never a problem besides some startup time issues. DOn't know what they're going for but it probably will never be as easy as S1's keyfile.

I'm also more curious about what other companies relying on the dongle are doing now. Switching to ilok would be cool, dropping the plugins would be bad (looking at you Vengeance).
VSL is going iLok.
Don't know Vengeance though they would probably go for code meter like Avenger, that is if those plugins are still doing well for sales, they are pretty old.
Any other developers using e-licencer?
i still have some waldorf licenses on the dongle but iirc they dropped it some time ago. refx with nexus has been gone recently. vengeance is still on, but i'm afraid they'd go the codemeter route if at all. thinking about how few companies are left, i guess steinberg dropping the elicenser was because it wasn't profitable anymore, not because they thought so much about their customers

"the new environment"
I always wanted a Logic type of modular environment. :D

Some people are probably going to want to go back to the dongle.
The only problem I've ever had with it was when I accidentally bumped my laptop off a table and it landed directly on the dongle.
The one on the back of my desktop - I forget it's there because it never gets moved.

Post

I didn't like the dongle at first. But I have become used to it and on balance I would rather have my licences in physical form than in the cloud.

So if I get the choice , I will keep the dongle.

Codemeter ?
Don't trust those with words of weakness, they are the most aggressive

+ 1.

Honestly ... when we weigh all options:

-- physical dongle (unfortunately discarded now)
-- permanent network connection (Data flow hardly controllable)
-- subscription modell with periodical net-activation

... then it seems to me that the dongle is still the most solid and
fairest solution. Unless, of course, Steinberg completely dispenses
with copy protection and trusts the sincerity of its users. But that
seems completely outside the conceivable options ...

They will send agents and they will check personally if you are using the legal version. Like pri*** from tv license, cheap "man in black" agents wandering around our houses to find tv pirates ;)

Haha, that would be the best solution! No protection horror, just nice agents. :tu:

last heard, they had cracked the dongle a number of years ago anyway, so not sure what the point is anymore. just keep the customers individual download instances behind their custermer login and call it a day.

Now I understand. They put a crack on that dongle.

Yep. This is why the last cracked Cubase is 5 from 10 or 15 years ago :)

I do not think this is good news at all. Steinberg has a tendency to screw things up. My point is - the current system works. And for that reason alone - given Steinbergs history - it should be left alone.
I'm pretty sure that the suggestion to change the licensing system came from an accountant within their system. Not a programmer of the software we are using.
