So after all the marketing and tutorials and debating with a lot of users and a ton of trial and error with m sound factory...

I do wonder what is the end goal of this plugin. It's limitations. What is V saying absolutely no to...this thing has potential to be the ONLY plug-in needed for making music. Especially with the custom GUI editor and insane depth allowed via unlimited wave tables x samples X oscillators

You all know I pined for years for the ability to use samples in m sound factory. And that sort of happened... But the ability to create any instrument? Unless I'm mistaken , it's still out of reach.

I mean it's marketed as THE LAST INSTRUMENT YOU WILL NEED. Which I think may need some asterisks. From what I've learned in talking to a few people this week is that it doesn't have scripts and it's sampling isn't even close to Kontakt. Now don't get me wrong Melda is the plugin that i love to use the most, and super annoying having to use Kontakt, beause of it's inflexibility... But I don't have a way to play an electric guitar, or any stringed instrument. Some other sampled instruments aren't feasible either.

So will scripts be added? Will sampling be all encompassing? I know I'm the world's most impatient customer. But I would like to know the direction, because the last instrument you will ever need.... Might be a misnomer.

It's another of those one and only things you will ever need? The best? The greatest? The ultimate? I already have a couple of them :D And I learned it is always a blatant lie.

I was hoping that this sampler would allow me to make an electric guitar... For a stringed instrument... But I don't see how it's possible now

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

This thing has so much potential. ..maybe they just need better videos explaining how it can be used

Well "the only instrument" and all that other marketing stuff keeps being that, pure marketing buzz words.

But let me ask you what exactly does not work? Judging from your screenshot it's pretty much (I think even a reduced version) of the DirectWave Sampler that has been ages in FL Studio. And I know there are some e-guitars instruments for it. The key there is to have not only multiple velocity stages but also multiple samples per velocity and small randomizations for parameters. Even randomized "transient samples" and "dirt for inbetween".

There is the entire world of physical modeling that MSF does not really address.

In terms of "true modular experience" MSF is limited and times bit awkward compared to Bitwig Grid.
For instance there's no gate signals. In Bitwig Grid or many other modular simulations (VCV Rack) you have gate signals and modules dealing with gate signals. This is completely missing in MSF. If you'd check out some of the Bitwig Grid Creations I bet you'd be amazed by it's capabilities in terms of generative music.

And I found it's not easy to use one Oscillator to modulate another one which would be basically FM. MSF has a extra module to be able to build such setups, but this module adds latency to the signal (in my case 12,5 msec).
And on top of that the audio oscillators use rippling to avoid aliasing, thus they are less "clean" used in the FM cross oscillator sceanrio. Try to compare a saw osciallator with a saw lfo at the same frequency.

I think the philosophy of MSF is more to be a Kontakt competitor based on samples and add some sugar. NOt saying that I don't like MSF. I have done whole tracks using only MSF as sound source, but I know it's limitations.

Can you give some examples?

The 2 front runners in physical modeling are

Applied Acoustic Systems (AAS) and SWAM Audio Modeling

Arturia is technically doing it in almost all their products but the only "pure" modeling they've done is with Piano V2

Not sure, if Pianoteq should be mentioned here as well.

Regarding MSF: I absolutely do not see it as a Kontakt competitor or a sampler at all. It's more like a ultra versatile synth to me, though.

Regarding the marketing: Here we go again: yes, win-loose for many people I guess, haha. I also would not use ultimate words like "only" or "most" for product marketings ... but that's the world right now, sadly.

Regarding videos: there is a MSF series right now, explaining all the stuff. It's still going on.

Hi Underoath77! What kind of scripts do you mean?
You know that you can also import sfz right? It can often be clearer, to make a file in an editor.
You can automatically sort by velocity and pitch, which is a super advantage.
So what exactly are you missing so you can finish your electric guitar?

Touché :D

I only see it as a competitor to the we-do-it-all-in-one-workstation-synths and I think it has the same flaws as them in terms of trying to do everything but only half good. But they are at least somewhat usable and clear, because the pro sound designes are developing them. Still imo the concept is meant to fail...

I havn't heard any sound examples so far of what MSF is best at or what's the innovative useful new character we get from it. If it still produces all the stuff we can already do more easy and convinient with cheaper tools, why should it be the last and only instrument I need?

Post

I guess I'm not understanding enough of what goes into the electric guitar. I'm wondering if I were to sample this plugin and get every single permutation velocity switch and note if I would be able to import it into msf? I already have enough equalizers and EQ settings to change this guitar and make it sound like any other guitar...I just want it within MSF as an instrument. That's all.

Where exactly are you stuck? Did you create the sfz file and scripted the samples? What's not working?
