Its very simple to get Bitwig up and running on Linux and it works just like in windows. You then have all the built in Bitwig stuff to use.

Once you get the hang of converting VSTs to the Linux format you can have a lot of freeware stuff running like Synth One, and others, but sometimes with graphics issues. It took me days to find the LINVST app and work out how to convert VSTs, but once I got it to work it became a bit addictive.

Have you tried Yabridge? I hear only good things about it!

I can either plug it in or not,and use Linux when I feel like it, or just boot windows. But when I am in Linux just browsing the web the experience is every bit as good as windows.
Yeah, I've Linux on a separate SSD that I just boot from :)

So I have booted Bitwig 8 track and decided I want to make a startup template. Should be easy, yes ? Nope, save is greyed out. So I look in the help pdf for why, and there is no search function. Why ? How am I supposed to find out stuff ?

I try googling. Nothing. Anyway, I find a video ( I hate videos) and eventually get to the bit about saving templates. Its there in the menu, easy peasy ! Except its greyed out in the 8 track version. Really ? I wasted a half an hour to find out a basic function is missing in this version. Not impressed.

I already said that the pdf does not have a search function.

EDIT* Ok I see what you mean, I will try and find one with a search function.

You can also open the PDF file in your browser, and press Ctrl + F, and then type in a search term.

So it turns out that even Bitwig 16 does not allow saving templates. Its only available in the full version,

You can "load" templates, but not save them in 8 and 16 track versions.

Those versions are very limited, I think. TBH, I didn't have much fun with 8-track, back when I tried it out 2 years ago or so.

For those who need a template, create a session with that, save it and ask here who wants to save it for you as template... Thinking about that, disabling template saving is super stupid...
On the other hand as the 8-track seamless switches into a demo if you load the Grid, it behaves a bit like a physical modular which also can’t store a patch as preset...
It is so much more than I had in the late 90s with a Digidesign 8-track...

But that's not exactly what Bitwig is competing against, right?

Post

Oh did I forget my smilies??? I also forgot to mention that in the late nineties Digidesigns 8-track was so much more than my 80s Fostex 8-track tape machine and DD did compete with Fostex back then... :) :ud: :P 8) ;-) :D  :phones:

Oh, sorry - the irony was completely lost on me...

Well, carry on then - nothing to see here.
