I would not hesitate to buy a Ensoniq DP-4 VST.
I've been waiting for one for a decade now, and i'll wait another if i have to.

Pretty off-topic but a little bit on: I've had a DP4+ in a guy's shop for almost a year now. I think we're both about to throw in the towel. He's a nice guy who advertises the refurbs on Ebay. Does anyone around here know of a hot shot Ensoniq repair guy?

He most likely already tried this, but it is frequently overlooked, sooo, fwiw to you or others:uraniumbilly wrote: Mon Mar 29, 2021 4:16 pm Pretty off-topic but a little bit on: I've had a DP4+ in a guy's shop for almost a year now. Here's how to reinitialize DP\/4(+):
HOLD SYSTEM/MIDI AND PRESS THE "B" BUTTON, THEN RELEASE BOTH. PRESS RIGHT ARROW ONCE. (It should say "REINITILIZE!!!!"). PRESS WRITE BUTTON AT PROMPT.
I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

Where can I find this nebula programs? Who offers them? thanks!GRUMP wrote: Wed Mar 24, 2021 3:47 pmThere's a DP4/ASR10 Phaser Programm in Nebula. Give it a try to get a feeling for the differences. And - no. You won't find someone who will generally prefer apples over peaches - and the DP4 had a quiet distintive sound that is yet unmatched as the JV2080. The DP4 is the horse I learned ob btw and still my measure.ghettosynth wrote: Wed Mar 24, 2021 2:58 pm
I wonder if anyone in this thread, with access to a DP/4, has A/B'd Ubiks to see if the collection plus routing meets their needs?

My DP/4 was as noisy as hell and, for me, it only made sense while I had an ASR-10, for which it was primarily made. I don't recall there being anything particularly special about it otherwise.

There are some other older DSP available in plugin form that may get you that vintage digital FX sound
Korg MDX
Roland Zenology FX
Air FX bundle
If you have them all you can probably create several vintage digital FX chains yourself.
Besides the DP-4, you also had Lexicon MPX-1 (last Lexicon HE with the lexichip), it was a reverb plus a FX chip.
Boss SE-50/SE-70 probably a bunch of Roland derived FX algos in a multi FX unit.

I have a DP/4 but prefer to use software when possible for ease of recall etc. At one point I went through every phaser I had or could find to demo to see if I could find one that sounded close to the phaser in the DP/4. I also tried combinations of drive and bit reduction with those phasers.
By far the closest I could get in sound was using the melda phaser and setting it to match the DP/4’s 12 poles and high and low frequency range of the modulation. It has a lot of the same character but isn’t nearly as exact as I would like.
Valhalla delay has a DP/4 phaser mode that unfortunately sounds nothing like the real thing. He admitted on his blog that he never listened to the hardware and “didn’t try too hard” just made a phaser that matched the specs in the DP/4 manual.
If you’re on PC there is a free old smart electronix plugin called supaphaser that is about as close as you can get with the melda but it’s buggy and hard to run on modern Macs.
Another one worth mentioning is the phaser included in the Creative FX Collection from Air. It has a different tonality (clearly different parameters than the ensoniq) but somehow drives things similarly with a mojo that’s very reminiscent of the DP4.

If some programmer takes the time to build the framework/GUI then we might have one, because the rom with algos is publicly available, runs on the same chip as the recent 1:1 vsti port of the Virus B/C using the Virus rom.

They weren't made using off-the-shelf components, Ensoniq built custom-made chips for these units.
