i've used presets as starting places to get where i'm going. it's rare for me that any plug in has a preset that just magically fits what i'm doing.. other than some reverbs. i've had some things that i know were meant for pads or synth sounds work well on drums or weird fx.

i think byome, triad, specops.. they're great at doing simple utilitarian things that sound excellent and make the track so much better overall combined with whatever other eq/compression etc processing i'm using. that missing special sauce. or the super weird sound design thing that becomes a 'voice' in the track.

presets are very user specific things and in my experience and context is everything. some presets try to give hints "put your drums through here" or something. this gives an idea of what the sound designer was doing when making the preset.

Have you an example from specops etc of a simple utilitarian thing that they do?

specops less so than triad/byome but i use it a lot for blurring hihats. smearing transients. it's also good for approximating sample rate/bit rate reduction but with a different character. pretty easy w/o getting into modulation to change the character of percussion sounds. this is what i'd consider utilitarian. also it's pretty easy to create ghostly layers underneath anything that really add to depth and space. i think people tend to overthink dsp that is capable of all kinds of crazy shit and think they need to use every feature when it's easy to do pretty simple stuff that can really help when mixing a track. or at least that's how i use specops a lot. a mixing tool.

Indeed, 'finesse' is an art unto itself.
I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

Tekker2 wrote: Sat Jan 02, 2021 1:36 am I just got BYOME and it sounds fantastic, but I'm having problems with popping/clicking on the Granulator. I've adjusted all of the controls but nothing smooths out the pops. I'm using it with a guitar amp sim Neural DSP Cory Wong and playing in real time. Here is a screenshot of my settings, is there anything I can do to get rid of the popping/clicking? Thanks.

We have something coming out soon that contains an extension of this granulator but very expanded and without some of the artifacts that you're noticing. If you enjoy this module I think you will be very very pleased.

I like Byome, but didn't really think multi-band demanded a completely separate product. I haven't bought any UA stuff since...

Does TRIAD have the same functionality as BYOME or are inherently different? I always assumed TRIAD was BYOME X 3 or something...

Sounds really interesting! Looking forward to the reveal.
If less is more, imagine how much more MORE will be.

Yeah, Triad is effectively a three way multi-band splitter with each band feeding an instance of BYOME. The only difference is BYOME has an AGC control in its master section, all the effects are identical. I can emulate this in Reaper (as you can in most DAWs I'm sure) with a splitter and routing the signal appropriately when I want to do this so never bothered with Triad.
