Modulator shapes not accurate/automatically smoothed?

I'm trying to set up a basic MIDI + Audio SC triggered volume shaper in MXXX. No matter how precisely I set the modulators, whether it's a Normal/Env mod via MIDI or an audio triggered Follower/Env mod, the shape the Modulator analyzer shows is not the same shape as the actual output modulation.

Here the analyzer is showing the Mod is triggering even slightly before the transient, outputting a basic 0-100% Off->On->Off envelope, attached to a volume function, and should just hard cut the audio when triggered

yet as you can see in the green Oscilloscope lane, not only does the modulator not cut hard at the trigger, it seems to linear fade out instead.

I've spent more time than I'd like to admit trying every possible way to do this, am I doing something wrong, or is there some hidden automatic smoothing somewhere???

it seems that MDynamics detection operates as precisely as necessary, however, there's no way to draw a custom LFO shape to use as a shaper curve, I feel like this shouldn't be this difficult and I must be doing something wrong

You may be asking about the Settings / Smart interpolation, but I'm not sure, I'm quite lost in the question.
