Changing audio output with master plugins results in no audio

This took me a while to figure out yesterday so I thought I'd leave a written trace of it. I have been working using the normal Windows audio output for a while and I had added 4 master plugins to the project.

Yesterday I needed to record some guitars so I connected an audio interface (Behringer U-phoria UMC404HD). I went into the project settings and changed the audio output ones so that they would use the ASIO driver from Behringer but I was getting no sound despite everything looking right (and Windows using the sound card as output, etc.).

Eventually I tried removing the master plugins and as soon as I removed the last one the output started working. Not sure if this is a bug or if it's obvious for some obscure reason I didn't realise but I thought I'd mention this.

Did you make the audio device change while the Edit was open?

When it's making no sound, try removing one of the plugins and putting SPAN (or similar) at the end. I've had cases where there is no sound coming out but it was actually one plugin outputting crazy. Like this:

Surely there must be consensus by now...

Well I've tried a few things (including restarting Waveform and reopening the project) when it wasn't working. Interestingly, when I removed the last master plugin the audio started flowing through correctly without the need to restart anything.

Was is a specific plugin, or any plugin?

I think the last one I removed from the chain was Black Box HG2, I didn't try and understand whether it could be because it was particularly responsible (I could have closed without saving and retrying but didn't think about that and I now saved and lost that project state).
