Do you need to render at a different sample rate than playback?
Waveform is one of the few DAWs that allows this. It's a non stop source of tech support issues since a lot of plugins don't respond well to sample rate changes.
My first step is going to be to do default export sample rate to playback sample rate. But would you be annoyed if I removed the option completely?

What do we lose if we do? I always use the defaults and they seem to work just fine, so to be honest, I've never really messed with that option. I just wonder how many days after you remove this option we're all going to ask to have it put back in!
Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and even Deezer, whatever the hell Deezer is.

I always render at the playback/project sample rate. I assume if I needed another sample rate I could just change/resample it in an audio editor.

Hate to be that guy, but I'd be quite bummed out to see it removed altogether. I'm also quite skeptical of the claim that Waveform is one of the few DAW's to do this. I can't think of a single DAW I've ever used that doesn't do this.FigBug wrote: Wed Apr 28, 2021 3:34 pm Do you need to render at a different sample rate than playback?

Can you just develop an automated response or FAQ to send people to when they have this issue?
Is it a Windows issue mostly? I've noticed Windows is very finnicky in that I have to often reset the sample rate on my interface even though it's set correctly. I think it resets itself to 48kHz or something, it's pretty annoying.

I checked what other DAWs do. I'll admit I'm not an expert with these DAWs, so maybe they can do it, but if they can, they don't make the option obvious. The default seems to be you render and playback at the same sample rate.Kang wrote: Thu Apr 29, 2021 1:43 amHate to be that guy, but I'd be quite bummed out to see it removed altogether. Ableton Live - Samplerate can be changed without reloading plugins. Render at any sample rate >= 44100 without reloading plugins. Lower than 44100 renders at 44100 and resamples the output.
Ardour - Sample rate is part of the project when created. I don't see where you can change this, if possible. Render is at project sample rate only. Output may be resampled before writing to file.
Logic Pro - Sample rate is part of project settings. Changing sample rate reloads all plugins. Render is at project sample rate.
Reaper - Sample rate can be changed. Plugins don't appear to reload. Render has a checkbox "Use project sample rate for mixing and FX/synth processing" which is always checked and can't be unchecked.
FL Studio - The current project must be closed to change the sample rate. Render is at project sample rate.
BitWig - Render at project sample rate only. Sample rate can be changed, plugins are reloaded.
Pro Tools - Sample rate is project setting, I don't see if it can be changed.
Waveform - Sample rate can be changed without reloading plugins. Render at any sample rate.

Suggest rendering at project sample rate and converting during the export, immediately before writing out to disk. That way the plugins don't change their sample rates and the option continues to be available for those who need to target multiple output sample rates.

I think it's convenient feature but not so necessary, especially if it gives more troubles than benefits.
This means down/upscale of resulting wav? I think the point of render is different - your instruments must play in given SR.Suggest rendering at project sample rate and converting during the export, immediately before writing out to disk. This is a great example of how different types of users will read the same question in completely different ways.Kott wrote: Thu Apr 29, 2021 3:14 am This means down/upscale of resulting wav? I think the point of render is different - your instruments must play in given SR.
You are assuming virtual instruments, which might adapt directly to a new sample rate to produce optimal results. I was assuming recorded audio clips, which would need to be resampled regardless.
Perhaps this could be a set of radio buttons:
(*) Render at project sample rate (maximum plugin compatibility)
( ) Render at export sample rate (maximum quality with supporting plugins)

AFAIK you can do it with Pro Tools, Reaper, and Studio One as easy as dropping down the sample rate option when you render, exactly like Waveform. Maybe I'm missing something though. Put me down for someone who would miss it, but it's not a deal breaker if it's best for you guys then go for it.FigBug wrote: Thu Apr 29, 2021 2:01 amI checked what other DAWs do. This is what I see in Reaper:

I don't see how to uncheck "Use project sample rate for mixing and FX/synth processing"
I'm assuming with it checked, it just resamples the audio after.

But you can still render your mix down to whatever sample rate you want. I honestly don't care how it's done, I'd just prefer to be able to do it. I've always considered this a very basic function of a DAW, but I know times change. Can you just do it how they do it?FigBug wrote: Thu Apr 29, 2021 7:01 pm This is what I see in Reaper:

I could, and I understand the use case for downsampling. MP3 supports fairly limited sample rates for example, so I understand if you want to bounce to MP3 or something, you don't really care about the sample rate, you just want something quick and one step.Kang wrote: Thu Apr 29, 2021 11:26 pm But you can still render your mix down to whatever sample rate you want. I don't really see the use case for upsampling however.
I think I'll leave the option, but make it default to project sample rate. Maybe make a warning if people change it.

Yeah, sample rates are normally a "set and forget" thing until it gives you grief. I have a USB headset that, for some reason, has the audio at 48 and mike at 44.1. Simply can't use with Waveform.
