I'm with you on that! :tu:

But it sounds like they are limiting distribution mainly to app stores, so not likely to happen. Kind of frustrating for those of us who use real computers for music making!

Hi DarkStar!

As it so happens, early today I approached a senior person at Microsoft to ask them about what plans, if any, they might have to allow VST / host distribution via the Microsoft 10 store

If anybody reaching this has any similar contacts, I'd encourage them to ask, too.

I guess the big plug-in host companies will have the resources to worry about GDPR and other issues around software distribution. The smaller companies like ours find things a bit trickier to navigate! ;)

Apple have made it relatively easy for plug-in companies, large and small, to distribute for both iOS and macOS via the official app store. I really can't see why Microsoft wouldn't allow the same thing through their own store!

Best wishes,

Pete

Hi!

Thanks for asking the question.

For a long time now, we've only distributed our software through the various official app stores.

You can read our detailed rationale here:
https://intermorphic.com/help/#faq-app-stores

Luckily for us, Apple support the distributions of Plug-ins (in AUv3 format) as "app extensions" for both iOS and macOS. That has allowed us to start distributing AUv3 format plug-ins to our customers.

Naturally, if Microsoft were ever to allow VST plug-ins through the Windows 10 store, we'd be in a position to look to develop a Wotja VST plug-in for Windows.

With best wishes,

Pete
Hi Pete

Sorry for returning late to the thread... not to be pedantic, but are you sure bundling a VST is an issue with Mirosoft?

If you sold, say, a version of Wotja that installs only the app and a version of Wotja that installs a VST along with it, with differing prices, I don't think the Microsoft or Windows store would care.

Or are the restrictions such that you're not even allowed to bundle a DLL with your executable? If that is the case I would consider changing to Steam entirely. I may be being too subjective here but IMO the Windows store is a pretty niche store anyway, I am a lifelong Windows user but I have only bought two apps ever there, and Wotja is one.

I've only ever bought one App. That was Wotja.

I get phone calls every so often from the Windows Technical Department telling me that some criminal internet activity has been reported by my system. I'll ask then next time ;)

As it so happens, the person at Microsoft has yet to reply to my questions!

On the other note, I wasn't aware that VSTs can be sold via Steam. Is that now a thing?

Well Cakewalk was selling their Sonar DAW via Steam a few years ago, before they went under...

I'm a bit puzzled here. Long time Noatikl user (lost it on a computer change, bummed). I have never, nor do i have any plans to, buy anything from the microsoft store. There is no other (fairly easy) way to distribute a vst? 'Cause having Wotja as a vst would really, really be nice.

You folks are doing some great work and i'm glad to see that "generative" has become a common term, hopefully it is reflected in your sales.

Hi all, there are a number of big reasons we sell only via the 4 main stores. I have reworked our FAQ on that to try to make our rational a bit clearer: https://intermorphic.com/help/#faq-app-stores. We appreciate that everyone has their own preferred stores, and we are really sorry that we cannot accommodate them all :(. Atb, tim

Windows 10 desktop user here. Tried the Wotja21 Lite for Windows today.

The download link takes you to the Windows Store. You can download and install the free Wotja21 Lite UWP (Universal Windows Platform) app without signing in to the store. If you are like me and had the Windows Store disabled in my firewall, you will need to open that up until installation is complete. I was able to block the Store again from the firewall afterwards, and launch the app without accessing the Store again.

Since I already had the LoopBe1 virtual MIDI adapter installed on my PC, I enabled that output in Wotja21 and input to my DAW track. Playing back some cool sounds with my AAS Chromaphone 3 plugin hosted in my DAW.

Very atmospheric! :tu:

Our Beta testers are about to get a massive addition to Wotja. It'll be interesting to see what they make of it :)

Just curious; I own Wotja 20 on IOS (iPad). Will I be able to run this on an M1 Mac Mini?

Post

Wotja 21 runs on M1 (Apple Silicon for macOS).

Do please let us know how you get on!

Best wishes,

Pete
