Pultec low end trick: Insights into recreating this on MXXX? Anyone already done it?

GOAL: Emulate the Pultec low end trick (simultaneous boost/cut of low frequency) on MXXX so have more flexibility over frequency selection, etc than the fixed hardware emulations.

I understand that the basic concept is that despite sharing a unified frequency selector, the boost/cut circuts actually have slightly mismatched bands, so it's boosting at one frequency and cutting at a higher frequency.

I have, however, tried recreating this with a simple mismatched boost/cut on a couple of my go to EQ's, and there's just something about even the Waves Pultec emulation that still sounds better which leads me to believe there's something else going on behind that characteristic sound.

Has anyone tried modeling this? If so, have you worked out a Melda patch? If not, do you have some insights into what else could be modeled to get closer to the hardware?

In TurboEQ there is a device named Pulmeld. Set frequency to 60 and resonance to 100, then increase gain for the Putec trick 👍

OK, thanks. I'll check it out. I was assuming it would require something beyond basic EQ controls since I've spent a bit of time with this on FabFilter's EQ, and I just can't seem to fully capture the sound regardless of mismatched band settings, shapes, q factors, etc. Waves Puigtec seems to be capturing something beyond that, and beyond the overall tube saturation as well.

No idea if it's resonance independent of Q, frequency dependent saturation or what, but certainly interested to hear if anyone has dialed in more particulars.

When this discussion comes up I always wheel out this great video from Boz

Awesome vid. I had tried this with TDR Nova as well which if memory serves is parallel, and still hadn't gotten the results. Will take another look in that direction and see if what I was doing differed from his approach point by point. I mainly use MDynamicEQ within MXXX and MSF, so I'm not as familiar with some of the other EQ options. Can MTurboEQ or some other Melda EQ option do this the same way via parallel bands, or is the MTEQ patch mentioned earlier trying to approximate the shape like I was with FabFilter?

Here is MXXX set up in a similar way to that video.

Will check it out when I get back on main system. That looks like a really interesting tool, too. I may have some other uses for it. Thx.
