The riffs you hate (and why you hate them)

Sometimes I don't know if I hate an opening riff because of how bad the riff is or because it tells me that it's the start to a crappy song.
Even if the piano player can't play, keep the party going.

Beck's "Loser" because I don't like wanky slide guitar riffs.

There is no riff that I hate. There are tons of songs I really dislike but I don't hate them either. I don't listen to radio and haven't done that in years. So I only listen to music I like. I don't spend time thinking about music I don't like. Life's too short for wasting time. I shouldn't had wasting time on this topic either.

Regarding that vocal 'ear-worms' thing... Helen Reddy.

I had not forgotten Yes and excitedly bought the album on the day it was released. The excitement died almost as soon as the stylus hit the first track.

You cannot appreciate the good without having the bad as a reference. Perhaps by taking such measures to avoid things you don't like, you are making your enjoyment of the things you like all the lesser. Or not.Daimonicon wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 6:40 pm There is no riff that I hate. There are tons of songs I really dislike but I don't hate them either. I haven't heard anything I dislike a lot recently except maybe a TV jingle before I turn the sound off, and I almost don't watch the tube.
But before lockdown I relied on things in the public where you have music forced on you, Starbucks, go into Walgreen's, any store and it's wall-to-wall.
I checked "Let's Dance", I didn't have a clear memory of it, only that one day and I was ready to go hurt a car or something it got so old. Meh, it's not a very obnoxious riff but the song sucks. I probably heard Zappa mock it in Be In My Video before I ever heard it. SRV does a gallant job trying but it doesn't work for disco I don't think.
"Let's dance the blues" - you'll love it, it's a way of life.

I definitely did not buy whatever album Owner appeared on. 952-something iirc.
it's IMO a kind of uneven effort. I actively like that song, though. I didn't like the direction overall and I developed an animus for Trevor Horn rather quickly. Wakeman liked to say "Owner of a Horse and Cart" for some reason.

I personally believe that one's development as an individual, musically, into one's genuine self is as much about refusal as it is about embracing.
You take what you need and leave the rest, anyway.

Wrong! I know what is good music for me without having to compare them to what I consider bad music. That doesn't make me like something lesser at all. On the contrary. I have more time to listen to what I like. I've been listening to music so many years that I know in an instant if I will like something or not.Dirtgrain wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 7:23 pmYou cannot appreciate the good without having the bad as a reference. I myself don't care for anything after Close to the Edge.jancivil wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 7:28 pm I definitely did not buy whatever album Owner appeared on. 952-something iirc.

I'm not judging, mind. Just stating a preference.

I was a bit earlier. After enjoying the solo albums I looked forward to their return when Going For the One came out. I missed Roger Dean's artwork on the way home. I was so put off by that opening track that I just put it aside and moved on. Tormato did not entice the wallet

You cannot have a concept of good, without a concept of bad as a referent.Daimonicon wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 7:44 pm Wrong! I know what is good music for me without having to compare them to what I consider bad music.
I did not say it made you something lesser.
This is so restrictive. You won't learn of any new music. It sounds awful, to just listen to the same without incorporating anything new. Also, too much of a particular good thing can make it stale.Daimonicon wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 7:44 pm On the contrary. I have more time to listen to what I like.
