This is what drives me batty about the whole thing:

When I first bought Bitwig off another KVR member here it took weeks to resolve it not staying registered. I entered the serial number a few times then eventually the problem changed, it would say it wasn't activated, then pop into registered mode. I literally gave up on trying to explain to support that it seemed to be phoning home every time it opened, and to this day I still think it seems that their hopelessly broken Copy protection method is a mess.

I have Bitwig registered on desktop and a laptop. This afternoon the laptop temporarily came up as unregistered, then phoned home I suppose and re-activated the registration? This is the clincher, online in my account at bitwig.com the laptop registration is the only one that shows up under "My Registered Hosts". There's not a trace online of my desktop registration.

I really like Bitwig, it's got some UX things that really appeal to me, but I'm terrified of the idea of ever using it live with the current state of the registration process. Maybe tomorrow I'll investigate it more, unplug the internet and see if both copies are working properly, but it really doesn't seem like you're getting a hardware registration with Bitwig, I suspect it's phoning home and checking registration often enough to be a problem.

Nothing here, nothing at Bitwig com.....
It is on the Bitwig website:
https://www.bitwig.com/discover/
This should be on the front page or at least on their support page.
However, it would have been better if they emailed everyone ASAP.

I don't remember Ableton sending any e-mails when my whole Live sessions would crash frequently due to VST or M4L bug. I'm willing to bet more work has been lost due to Live crashing all the time, than this Bitwig "outage" lasting 6 hours... ;) :P

Unless you're writing this with genuine care, because you consider moving to Bitwig? :scared:

Will it not boot at all if you lose your internet connection ?
No. Users who got wind of the bug before loading up Bitwig were able to run the program with an offline activation and no active internet connection i.e. airplane mode without issue. If you have an active internet connection, Bitwig does connect to their servers; it's how it knows to send you update notifications etc.

I don't recall Steinberg making any of their eLicenser downtime incidents front page news on their website either, but I'm happy to be proved wrong if anyone has a screenshots to share!

So the simple solution is to activate offline while you have an active internet connection and then ask for update notifications by email ?

A simple button to temporarily connect to download the update and then disconnect would solve the problem ?

Or is it more complicated than that ?

And there he is.
I don't understand why you have to bring up Live in a Bitwig topic every time (and vice versa). It gets tiring. This is not about Live. Also your analogy doesn't hold.

This problem is purely a Bitwig problem and it's a bad one. It will no doubt be resolved. However, communication is just bad. It was vague, too late, didn't immediately reach all users and didn't offer a solution on how best to reactivate (some users obviously had problems with it).

By the way, I'm not considering moving to Bitwig, I've been using it for a few years now.
I'm not the one selling and re-buying licenses over and over again. :dog: :D

So? That makes what Bitwig does suddenly okay? A strange way of reasoning.

History has shown that not being transparent, honest and open about problems, outages, hacks, data breaches etc. is harmful to companies.

But hey, continu to name everything others do badly to justify Bitwig's mistakes.

No, just that it's not something unique to Bitwig and its a little unfair to insinuate their behaviour deviates away from the normal practice of other similar companies, who have faced similar problems.

mmmm so I would like to speak to the manager of this establishment. Pronto. Yes, right now. My name is Karen and I have a degree in business so I can tell you that this is no way to treat customers. I will file a police report and give a bad review if you don't offer me a personal apology and tuck me to bed.

I wouldn't know based on your mostly negative posts and opportunistic jabs towards Bitwig :)

Good for you, though!

I work on a laptop that is sometimes connected to the internet, sometimes not. I've not done an offline activation, nor have I ever been prevented from using Bitwig. I'm glad I missed the drama, but I don't see it as cause for ongoing worry.
