SLiC wrote: Tue Jun 08, 2021 9:59 am Bitwig is very much 'DIY' and Live is more of an 'ecosystem' with MAX.
It could be said quite the opposite. M4L is actually a real DIY (not for everyone but way deep and powerful)
Bitwig is DIY as in you 'have to' do it yourself, no one else selling devices unlike MAX which is an entire ecosystem!

Bitwig is far more 'plug and play', MAX is more like a visual programming language....To be fair to Bitwig, I could make an instrument in Bitwig without having to look at a manual, I have tried to learn MAX many times and never got very far!
That’s your problem but not a label for Live-Max.
Yes you pay for some M4L but you can choose to dive in or choose out of the hundreds of free stuff.

When BWS will have Grid MIDI out it will be fun indeed.
I don't have a problem? The Grid is far easier to use than MAX, that's just a fact, but what I was saying is that professional development of add ins is a big advantage for Live over Bitwig and one of the main reasons I still use Live (I have a large collection of free and paid MAX devices)

Ease of use and integration (especially with the modulation system) is the big advantage for Bitwig so I am Glad to have Live 11 and Bitwig, they don't compete for me, they are different.
When I said you have a problem (no offense) I meant technically because to dive into M4L it ain’t easy for the majority of us, me included.
The Grid unfortunately it’s completely useless to me but I really love they modulation system (no global yet...) but what M4L it’s capable of is astonishing and in fact I’m on the verge of give it a try and see the ROI for my music.

I have both. With one I make sounds (leisure time off), with the other one I make music.

No worries- Yes, very different and although I loved the 'concept' and implementation of the grid I am far less interested in it than I would be a midi grid...now MAX is much faster and has MPE (and multichannel audio) I think we will see a whole new wave of MAX...one day I may even re-open the books I have bought on MAX and give it ago again ;-)

Funny thing is after all this MAX talk I had another go at it tonight...I had forgotten (distracted by Bitwig!) how great BEAP is...its quite a lot like the Grid actually and just as easy to use if you want to make a synth!

The standard version is one of my favourite third-party M4L devices, might upgrade at some point in the future.
Always Read the Manual!

Update....

Short version: My third party plugins are finally work flawless in Live 11.

Long version: To upgrade to Live 11, I had also upgrade my Mac OS from Sierra (at least) to Mojave. There was mainly a problem with Native Instruments plugins, they immediately crashed when I opened the GUI. In Native Access the version number of this plugins was labeled 0.0.0, so I pressed the reinstall button and now everything is fine again. I'm sorry, in this case it was my fault, not Ableton's. :dog:

That does look good - what are the main differences between the new Pro version and the old one?

I also started creating synths with BEAP, two, or three weeks ago. I like the possibility to use additional Max/MSP objects, I think that's unfortunately not possible with Max for Cats OSCiILLOT.

The documentation is much better than a few years ago, but sometimes I have to invest still a big amount of time to solve simple problems....

It is staggering to me how little press BEAP gets- it's like Rektor and Reaktor Blocks is built in to Live Suite for free! It even has MPE modules now!

The 'dearjohnreed' tutorials on YT are excellent, but I never seem to stick at enough for stuff to sink in (you have to use it, not just watch it!). I probably have a couple of dozen 'modules' I understand out of many hundreds....and they keep adding more (MC stuff is mind-blowing!)

I also bought a new book 'Electronic Music and Sound Design - Theory and Practice with Max 8 - Volume 1 (Fourth Edition)' which seems to be highly recommended, as sometimes I learn better with a book on the beach and no other distractions!

I see there's even a volume 2.
Did you already read a part? And if so, what do you think so far? Is it an useful addition to the video courses?
