Are there any clues they're related, though?

Reading Bitwig's statement they seem to be taking full responsibility, so perhaps - assuming they're using Fastly at all? - they had a piece of code that was supposed to handle temporary outage of the CDN but it failed?

On the other hand, maybe Bitwig is the "single customer" who brought Fastly down? :D

FWIW, I did get an email (although, this may have been in reply to my support request) and, of course, it was posted on this forum. Perhaps the email is connected to having an up-to-date account?

What bothers me is that it phones home at all to check on old installs. I haven't installed the beta, and my perfectly valid copy of v3 momentarily called home to validate itself. This is definitely worrying and people don't think it is, then I don't get how you can think that? I want' the authorization to live on the drive itself, not in Bitwig's cloud server.

It has nothing to do with whose server's fault it was, and everything to do with the shaky reality of cloud based authorizations, even if to just 'double check'.

I doubt Bitwig finds any of this funny, and I'd also guess they are taking steps to make sure it never happens again. They are a good team and they clearly care about Bitwig users.

I'd bet much more is going on, like user and design analytics. I mean, why not? Bitwig hasn't pronounced any strong stance on user privacy, or user rights that I know of?
Yes, that kind of thing could be considered politics, but they haven't been afraid to make such statements in the past, so ... I wouldn't be surprised if that's going on.

By the way, for Linux users, you can use something like firejail ( https://github.com/netblue30/firejail ) to block network activity for a specific application.
Your launch command would look something like this:

I heard from their support people that it does NOT need an always on network connection, and that offline normally works.

There was kind of a perfect storm. A major internet outage at a very major cloud company (Fastly). Plus a bug that caused the activated running Bitwig apps to deactivate while running. The fastly outage wouldn't have caused the whole problem, a bug in Bitwig also caused this.

Support told me they're removing this offending code and this WILL NOT Happen again, even if their cloud services go down.

If the WholeDamnBitwigCloud is down, my understanding is you can't activate a new copy but once a copy is activated it should work without any internet connection needed and without any login prompt at startup of bitwig.

My music pc is offline. Even when I update Bitwig I download from my other pc and move the installer with a usbstick. Never had a problem. If it wasn't for kvr I wouldn't even know about this problem.
