I hope I am posting this in the right section of the Forum.. If not please re-direct and I will copy/ paste this post there.

I am having troubles understanding the offset function in the XMF filter. I have been trying to understand how the function works in regards to serial/ parallel mode through trial/ error/ youtube tutorials.. but nothing has brought me any closer to understanding how to properly use this tool.

I am definitely a visual learner.. so simple drawings or diagrams w/ the cutoff/ offset values posted would be the best (if anyone has the time to do so..). Explanations work too, but maybe type it in laymen's terms if possible :scared:

And yes.. I have the manual right in front of me, but the explanation in the manual doesn't help

Thanks to those who post in advance! Much Appreciated

Post

Also to add.. I have no idea what is going on in single mode or diff'ed mode either :(

XMF module is a multimode filter and actually has two filters inside. The cutoff frequencies of both Filter 1 and Filter 2 are controlled via Cutoff knob. The Offset knob allows to move cutoff frequencies of both filters in opposite directions. If you are a visual person, try using spectrum analyser to really see what's going on.

As for filter routing modes:

- Single: incoming signal is splitted into L and R channels. Filter 1 controls L channel, Filter 2 controls R channel.
- Serial: signal first goes to Filter 1 and then to Filter 2. It's like having two VCFs in a Grid, one after another. Try this: set Filter 1 to LP4, Filter 2 to HP3 and turn Offset knob all way to the right - you'll get a dualmode DJ filter (controlled via Cutoff knob).
- Parallel: well... two stereo filters in parallel. Incoming signal is duplicated, first copy goes to Filter 1, second to Filter 2. Gain is compensated.
- Diff'ed: same as Parallel but the phase of a signal copy going to Filter 2 is inverted. If settings of both filters are equal you'll get full phase cancellation.

Actually XMF is 2 stereo filters, so 4 filters total.

Zebra 2 manual, page 36 is a good read about what it can do. :)

Ed's diagram are just great

Try to listen what's happening musically.
Drop XMF under a normal Osc, Cutoff around 65, resonance 45-50 and move slowly the offset in small
steps.
The fun beginning with modulating. Choose LFO1 to modulate Cutoff. Slow down the LFO Speed
so you can clearly observe what is happening.

Now choose the same LFO1 to modulate the Offset and listen.
(right click on the empty slot next Offset and choose LFO1)

Then modulate the cutoff + and the offset - there you'll hear the 2 different sweeping filter peaks.
Set to paralell. etc...

There are 15 different filters and 5 different overdrive + the FM so it's a lot to play with.
Nice toy :D

OUTSTANDING! Thanks so much, Ed! :tu:

Must check this!
The notes you don't play creates the silent gaps for you to hear the notes you do play :phones:

Unfortunately, Ed's links are dead/expired. Fortunately, you will find a few similar graphics towards the end of the user guide.

Nope. Just checked and as far as I can see they're still working. :)

They don't appear to be working for me, either, Ed.

If you go to the post, hit quote then copy and paste the links into a new browser, you can download them and they work. Something about how they're setup, linking to Dropbox images, isn't playing nice with forum.

Hi Ed,

off this topic:
please contact me or drop an answer here.
I payed Absolute Zebra via PayPal-Link (2019, still working, $20 USD, transaction = ok, recipient: Belinda Downs) on the 10th of June 2021, but untill now no reaction.

Thanks a lot.
