I taught someone Renaissance Counterpoint via Zoom during lockdown (they're NOT on social media so I can safely say that I was bored shitless - don't think it showed as I tend to be VERY enthusiastic when in 'teaching mode')! :) Yeah, those exercises in polyphony...aaaargh! :borg: And don't get me started on Species Counterpoint...please, seriously...don't! :evil: :ud:
I've related the stupid anecdote around 8 thousand times at Music Theory, but I was so bored at CCM Honors History (I'm a high school dropout, what am I doing in this thing. Actually it was theory acumen and their best testing :scared:) I was showing up late, inattentive, unserious and finally this dipshit called me up and suggested it would be better for both of us if I dropped it. Two trimesters into a three trimester course and we hadn't got to Palestrina. We had to write essays on the difference between this or the next thing off of cassette copies of shite budget label pressings which weren't in great shape either.

Later I looked at a Renaissance Counterpoint textbook in the library - MUCH later - and sought to slog through it, and it was just too boring to take seriously, in my late 40s or whatever with not a lot going on.

No, when I was an undergrad I refused Species. I didn't know a lot but I knew I didn't want that. Counterpoint is perhaps my strongest suit and I wanted Free, which you cannot haz without the Fuxing Fux.

to me there is precious little before Palestrina to care about (from Western Europe; NB: the text was the Grout*). But this was one o' those tweedy dweebs with halitosis who was sehr serious about this stuff, and we were kids. I don't recall anyone being enthused by this approach. ultraconservative
the Honors thing is designed for academics who were going to get advanced degrees, I guess. I don't know, I'm an alien basically. (*: which radicalized me, the dull hegemony of that, confer Furtwangler and the argument from nature for the 12tET system and tonality)

Jan, this post of yours made me laugh so much it still hurts an hour later!!!

No argument from me... I regularly had blazing rows with the Head of Dept at uni... He so lacked any real world perspective and I was an inexperienced, rebellious 19 Yr old on a mission to educate him... He was probably the world's leading voice on Mozart at the time and hated anyone challenging his own particular viewpoint...I couldn't resist poking him with ridiculous left field questions! 🙄

Eventually in my 2nd year he threw me off the course without any warning... He thought I'd just disappear... Nope... Other professors and lecturers backed me and after a formal hearing in front of the Vice-chancellor, I was re-admitted and he was reprimanded for not following procedures... we never spoke again at any point! 😭😂

I wasn't assertive like that or argumentative. I just wasn't very reverent. Some pianist also in the course made a joke on the name Clemens non Papa "Clemens, non papa!" (like a Maury Povich gag), we both cracked up, and this pissed off Tweedy. This was someone who never did anything real, I guarantee it.

I liked the 'Music Theory' prof - James Gallatin - but were I a certain kind of individual I would sue him for that 4 points he took off my final grade, which should have been 100 but I committed covered fifths in a german sixth to V - Mozart fifths, yo - (once I'd read about that I have to conclude this test was designed so that no one may get 100, because there's nothing else could be done with it/trick question). Pretty sure it can be proven time and time again, but no matter, Mozart did it, JS Bach...

Wasn't entirely sure that this one 100% 'held together' at first despite the single melodic thread running through... it does change style quite dramatically at times...but it's starting to grow on me now! :)

Distorted guitar - i do know what you mean (though wouldn't necessarily say it was anachronistic...though maybe the particular sound here is a tad 1980s Hair Extension Rock)? :)

I added the guitar ostinato pattern to give a little forward drive to the underlying rhythmic feel and then changed it from the original 'clean' FX to a more rock sound so that it blended in with the other parts more easily + maybe added even more energy somehow.

A piece that evolved out of one simple melodic motif - a little melodic idea that is present in each and every section of the music.

That's what happens when I don't come around as much as I used to. Took me 5 days to get to this.

Anywho, that's the quickest 5 minutes I've ever sat through. Simple motif turned into a really cool track. The mix is great. Everything about it is great.

Anybody who doesn't hear the Alan Parsons influence is deaf. Alan himself would be proud.

It is just me. Since this tune tended toward our own medieval moods, I just made a blind analogy to our own preferred instrumentation. Guitar was moody too, and I liked it. We each have our signatures and should make room for their diversity.
