Is Audacity now Spyware? And why is It ‘PG-13’? (Post from synthtopia.com)

Can someone explain in layman terms how Muse 'acquired' audacity in the first place? It's obviously open software so anyone can get the code and publish their own version (forking it) but how does one group gain control of the main 'official' branch?

Cheers.

There might be rights on the name… For sure for the domain..

Maybe the check box is just a placebo ;)

This is the first I'm hearing about this. Thanks for the heads up. Guess I'll stick with an older version of Audacity or just use Ocen Audio for some quick editing.

I read that version 3.0.2 is ok (in the links posted in this thread) because it is before all the acquisition happened(?)
I have two versions in Linux, but the numbers and licenses are confusing.

3.0.2 is okay, yeah. The telemetry stuff is to be introduced in 3.0.3.

I'm still not a fan of how they went about announcing the whole thing, but eh.
My solo projects:
Hekkräiser (experimental) | MFG38 (electronic/soundtrack) | The Santtu Pesonen Project (metal/prog)

Story goes that Muse turned it into spyware, and the community backlashed. One of the guys (who i suspect was involved with the original project) forked it, and it would compile, but there was no gui. when he reached out for gui support and called the forked version "tenacity" some of the 4chan crowd got weird and started showing up at his house, so he quit the project and handed it back over to muse.... That's where we are at, and why we can't have nice things.

It’s a very strange story, as much as i’m disgusted by musegroup, the bit about 4chan rejects cutting the guys arm (?) is weird. There’s on going coverage at the Register:

It’s worth checking the comments at the Register btw.

Who is 4chan?
Reading the comments made me feel Déjà vu! Maybe in some JRPG and Visual novels!

Wikipedia on 4chan: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4chan

..or, more succinctly, a wretched hive of scum and villainy.

It spawned 8chan, then 8kun, and the whole QAnon movement.
We shall see orchestral machines with a thousand new sounds, with thousands of new euphonies, as opposed to the present day's simple sounds of strings, brass, and woodwinds. -- George Antheil, circa 1925 ---

Thanks! I'm reading now! I thought it is just a name similarity! Oh well, small world it seems!

LOL! Sorry, that's all a bit nuts and, TBH, I don't know, nor care, who I believe.

It doesn't really matter what happens next, a lot of people will just never install audacity again. Terrible name anyway. Any fork that ditches the name and anything close to it, including tenacity or sneedacity, and makes it look less fugly is likely to gain some traction at this point.

I'd like to know too.
