Which is why Reason became a plugin. Plenty of people enjoying making loops or riffs in the above trio and then using Pro Tools or Cubase to make it into a full song.
I never got that. Why would anyone do it? In Bitwig, when I'm done with sound design and writing loops / sequences, I can bounce them out to separate tracks, pack all the source midi, VST instruments & FX into a folder and disable it which hides it from the view, RAM and CPU. Then I can work with those samples either on the Arranger or - better yet - in Clip Launcher, where I can easily mix & match stuff, group them into scenes to experiment with arrangement order and finally set up some follow actions to have a complete song. Then I can again export the stems - or record/perform the song from Clip Launcher to Arrangement - pack the looping playground into a folder & disable that. Now I can do proper mixing (and "mastering").

And it's all contained in a single project file/folder, where I can always go back to earlier steps if I really needed to.

Create one folder with symlinks (Google it if you don't know what it is) directing to all your other locations and point Live to that.

Create one folder with symlinks
For Windows you have to use a 'Junction', not a 'normal' Symlink.

Yeah, I know. It's a type of symlink, I thought?

Why? mklink is included in Windows (since Vista):

Because I can never tell the right order of parameters, despite the help; and that she'll tool is idiot-proof, which is ideal for me ;) :D

Is there some reason you guys are using complicated "symlinks" and messing around with "shell tools" ?

All I do is right click the VST folder containing the VSTs that I want to show up in live and create a "shortcut".

Now just drop that shortcut into your main VST folder and that folder will be inside your main folder.

You can name each folder what you want to identify them. Works fine and the VSTs load up. You can have as many shortcuts as you want to as many VST folders that you want.

Yes, because it's easier and faster ;)

Seriously, a shortcut isn't a 'real' symlink (or junction), but a file. The Windows shell for example can't handle shortcuts, you can't 'cd' into a shortcut to a directory and not all programs work with a shortcut to a directory.

I never knew that's enough. For most other DAWs or software that's particular on where their data is but I want it moved to external HDD I have to use symlinks, so it's a matter or applying without much thinking what worked elsewhere to here as well :)

I never was a big fan of Ableton Live, but I'm discovering it's actually interesting and fun.

And The limitation of 8 tracks in Live Lite is quite challenging.

As to Reason becoming a plug-in... So they could sell it to more people?

I don't think anyone would mind that (it's obviously a great business move!) if they haven't abandoned the development of DAW itself.

I think maybe the separation is so that they could do things with the DAW that they might not have been able to with the rack tightly integrated. Maybe that's why there's been no news on the DAW recently. Just a guess. A hopeful one.

There's already plenty you can do in rack while used in Reason that you can't when outside of it (groove mixer, patterns, routing of MIDI, audio & CV between tracks, "SSL" mixer integration, etc.).

Releasing RRP was simply a business move aimed at extracting money in 3 ways:

1) Users disillusioned with lack of Reason DAW development could move on & take their (unsellable!) REs elsewhere

2) Users who left Reason long time ago could cheaply access the Rack (and any REs they owned + all the new ones in v11, especially in Suite where they got 16 REs at $10-15) while staying in their other DAW

3) New users would treat RRP in a similar manner we use Kontakt, Halion6 or modular environments (Voltage, Softube, Reaktor, VCV etc.) where we expand them by buying new instruments, effects and utilities

While first two were definitely a success, I don't think the 3rd really took off? And the problem with 1 & 2 is they're one trick ponies and not a sustainable business model. Hence the launch of Reason+

Sorry, I forgot we're discussing this in Love Lite thread :dog:
