SFZ and soundfont levels

Hi, I know this isn't strictly a Tracktion issue, but I reckon one of you will know the answer to this !

If I play my keyboard to a midi track that's routed to my Audigy's internal synth, Tracktion's level meter on that track responds nicely... just hitting the reds when I whack the keys hard - and it sounds nice and loud too.

Now, if I load the same soundfont into SFZ and do the same thing (obviously routing to an audio output this time), Tracktion's level meters hardly move and the output volume is significantly less.

Why ? What? When? Who? (why do all 'query' words start with 'wh' ? :-) )

Anyway, back to the point ! ... I'm guessing that the level meters show midi velocity on a midi track and audio level on an audio track ?

So... why is it so much quieter when SFZ plays the soundfont compared to the soundcard ? I'm using the kX drivers btw. All mixer controls are at max, so it's not that.

Has anyone else noticed this problem ?

Many thanks for any replies !

Cheers,

Kev.

i find the similar problem, it seems that sfz has a lower output when in tracktion than when in external .exe mode

Yeah--this was happening to me last night. All tracks sound about the same level--audio clip or VST plug--except sfz soundfont which is VERY quiet.

Aneng, did you know you can put more than one volume/pan filter on the track to boost the volume? That might be what you want to do.

There is a way to increase the volume in sfz...but I don't know how. :( I remember reading something on the RGC forum.

Were you thinking of this post?
René wrote:It is possible to adjust the sfz output level in several settings: -6dB, 0dB (default), +6dB, +12dB and +18dB.

Different hosts result in different output levels, so this adjustment is required for your particular host.

To do so, edit this registry file:

http://www.rgcaudio.com/downloads/freew ... tLevel.reg

enter any of the following values: "-6", "0", "+6", "+12", "+18" in the Output Level string (set to "+12" in the file), save it and then double click on it. That will set the default sfz level.

Great tip, makes things better :)

Just the job !! Nice one. Thanks for that. :D
I'm still 4dB quiet on sfz compared to my internal soundcard synth, even at +18 (I tried extrapolating it up to +24, but no joy on that one !).

Anyway, it's a 90% improvement :D

heh why didn't he implement that like on a switch or something?

Thanks LBN. I didn't feel like reading through 80 pages of posts.

if sfz has you frustrated, I found a couple other ones on KVR today.

One is called Font! and I auditioned it today with the NS piano soundfont. I didn't get that annoying message from sfz that there wasn't enough memory to load the font.

However, it also seems to be slightly quiet relative to other VSTi, but I like the interface better than sfz.

You won't get that annoying message from sfz either if you set it up properly. Do a search on sfz for half a dozen posts discussing this.

Chico,

I was involved in the other threads on sfz, on playing DFD and so on. Going to DFD mode increases latency on my machine quite a bit. It's not the greatest machine, Win98SE, only 256 MB ram, etc. With sfz, I found that I had to be running a memory management software all of the time while using Tracktion, in order to avoid having to use DFD mode, and to keep from getting the memory error.

Using this other font player, I get no annoyances whatever. It seems a little more forgiving than sfz.

Fair play mate, i'll have to give it a go. Sorry, i think i'm being a bit arsey this morning, as the missus has arranged for a big f**k off wardrobe to be delivered on my day off, and it's flat packed. Been at it for about 3 hours now

Should have seen that one coming really ....
