W.A. Production "Dodge Pro" for $4.90 is likely the cheapest thing you'll find, and it's not a half-bad little tool for what it does either.

The "best" deal is really going to depend on what you want. The iZotope $49 bundle is astonishing value if you don't already have most of the things in it. If you have any need for an arpeggiator, the Venomode Bestsellers Bundle is great for $33. Vintage synths, Cherry Audio's Polymode for $19 is totally worth it. Etc.

i've become fatigued by all the sales shit, it's overwhelming. there's a sale one something all the f**king time, it's impossible to track actual price/worth of plugins and everything just feels like someone is trying to scam me out of my money

I prefer devs that sell at a fair price and allow license transfers - like Valhalla. Or maybe do an introductory price and that's it. But as long as the initial price is fair and the license can be transferred I am happy. I hate the ruthless marketing and there are some companies I just wont buy from because of that - my past experience of disappointment with their products has taught me that

What I've done recently is consider:
1/Do I already own something like x?
2/Have I learned that similar software thoroughly so that I am sure the new shiny is doing something I can't already do with what I have in my DAW or in 3rd party software (individually or in combination)?
3/Is what x can do, that my other plugins can't, something I might actually use?
4/With regard to 3/, check plugins folder and look at the percentage that you initially answered "yes" to but seldom, if ever, use now
5/Does the purchase of these new toys improve or impede your ability to make music?

If your answers are 1/Yes, 2/No, 3/No, 4/the majority, and 5/impede then it's safe to say you can disregard most of the sales. A friend of mine decided the only two synths he needed were one wavetable (Serum) and one VA (Repro5) and paid full price for both. He's spent way less and creates more than I do while I'm just looking through my plugin folder at all the "bargains" that I rarely use.

Consequently, since adopting this approach, I'm learning my instruments and effects more thoroughly and finding that they can do most of what I thought, on a shallower perusal, they weren't capable. I'm also spending far less money and using my time more productively in learning and using my purchases. Most of the time I come here now, I realise that what is on sale is nothing that I don't already own in some regard or have any particular use for in my production.

Admittedly, I do believe I'm now essentially a Bargain Center apostate. :hihi:

Agreed. I kinda like the approach that valhalla, xfer, oeksound, fabfilter or soundtoys take. They know their value and stick to it. I do appreciate sales, but they should only occur rarely (like black friday or something). Introduction sales I find strange because you basically say: here is our new product and it is overvalued, but if you buy it now you get 10% off.

Plugin sales are driven a lot by word of mouth and early reviews. It makes a ton of sense to get as many people as possible to buy things right away so they can start talking about it to friends. It doesn't (necessarily) mean the plugin is overvalued.

That is true but still. After an introductory sale people are less likely to buy it ''full'' price.

Sounds like your friend got married. I'm not ready for that kind of commitment. ;)

Thanks for the thoughtful post, though. I give that kind of consideration to pricier purchases, but that's pretty rare since I'm such a cheapskate. Sometimes you just need a hit. Nothing like that new plugin smell!

I can resist pretty much all instrument plugins now, but I’m a sucker for decent effects

Just how I’m seeing things atm, you enjoy that vst hit

If you plan on purchasing your first Universal Audio hardware, you can get a free additional plugin. Just send a PM.

I was being sincere in my appreciation of your advice. However, I think convincing the uninitiated to commit like your friend did is a much tougher sell.

No problem. Think I had a bit of an acquisition addiction for a few years and got way less done than when I was just using the stock DAW plugins, freeware and my Emulator X2 sampler.

Currently figuring what I need and looking to offload what I don't.
