Hey all, I have been looking for a replacement for my Korg Kronos in this topic, and settled for Arturia Pigments 3 for all my synth needs. For my sample needs, I want good-quality acoustic piano (Kronos SGX-2 engine-like), e-piano (EP-1 engine), (tonewheel) organ (CX-3) and samples of various instruments (in particular orchestra, choir and ethic/world instruments). It seems IK Multimedia SampleTank 4 is perfect: very nice interface, samples of good variety and high quality.

I am a big fan of FOSS and using open formats (such as plaintext and csv). As such, I was wondering whether there is a way to accomplish the quality, breadth and convenience of SampleTank with a collection of open files (like .wav) and a player of choice. I know of SFZ, but is this convenient and of high quality? I also experimented with HALion and could make my own instruments from sample packs, but I would not call this convenient. I would love to hear your input.

It depends. Convenience is subjective, but there are free tools and info available to help you make an instrument. An SFZ file is basically a text file with parameters and mappings to audio files, so the quality will depend on the audio files and how well the SFZ file is constructed.

There are free instruments there in Kontakt, SFZ, and Decent Sampler formats, but not all instruments are available in all formats.

Sampletekk is a currently having a sale with some inexpensive SFZ acoustic and electric pianos on offer - https://www.sampletekk.com/index.php?ro ... arch=sfzed
