A VST sampler that samples?

I heard people on the Sonicstate podcast talking about it fairly recently in excited tones, a VST sampler that actually samples but I cannot track it down or remember the name of it. Any clues?

Why does that matter? It's not like you lack ways to record audio inside a computer, is it? Even much better ways than what you will probably have in a so called sampler.

I must have missed that on Sonic Talk. HALion samples but that is much more than a sampler.

Gaz is a big HALion fan, and they had an episode in which they sampled a kind of boomwhacker, but that episode was a while ago.

"A Vst-sampler that samples" - what should be the advantage?
Case 1: I bounce a section in the DAW as a wav file and drag
this file onto the sampler with the mouse. Voila - the sample is in
the sampler!
Case 2: I mark a section in the DAW and press the "sample"
button on the sampler. And yes: the sample is also in the sampler
this time.
But what is the difference between case 1 and case 2? Why not
just drag the wav files into the sampler and that's it? Isn't the
sampling function of software-VST-sampler completely superfluous?

I use it for sampling various non preset synths - it has an autosampling capability, create a chromatic MIDI file, set up HALion and you will get a set of topped and tailed samples with the note info in the name.
But as said, it's a bit overkill if you only want a sampler that samples.

I'm starting to think I imagined it. I understand the people saying you can sample into the DAW and then drag and drop. I thought the same, but I remember them talking about it on the podcast and being very excited by it. But I have searched high and low and cannot find any such sampler.
EDIT - It was Expert Sleepers Crossfade Loop synth effect which can sample directly in to the VST: https://www.expert-sleepers.co.uk/xfadelooper.html. Not quite what I had imagined but I'll try it out.

sampling capabilities in a sampler is a very good feature for “creative sampling“ on the fly.
For creating big orchestral libraries or other “serious“ stuff it's not such a big benefit anymore though.
Oh and then there is autosampling of course, that can be very beneficial to sample other synths or other non acoustic instruments with MIDI capabilities.

Image-Line's FL Studio as a DAW or DirectWave as a VST.

oh gosh yes, I remember them talking about it and thinking hasn't it been out for years? Wasn't there a free version with Computer Music magazine at least 5 or more years ago? I didn't find it very useful.foxrobins wrote: ↑Thu Aug 26, 2021 7:50 am I'm starting to think I imagined it. I understand the people saying you can sample into the DAW and then drag and drop. I get the idea of sampling directly even if you are effectively still going through the same A/Ds of your interface to get it into your sampler. Depending on what you want to do have you thought of using a cheap hardware sampler like the Teenage Engineering PO 33?

Reason - but only when using the Reason DAW. They haven’t implemented that function in the Reason Rack Plugin VST (yet).
It’s very cool though. ANY device that can play back samples has a button that lets you sample directly into the device. Even the convolution reverb!
You can patch the sample audio input from anything within the DAW, or external inputs.

Suppose you are creating a multi-sample, or a drum kit. You can automate the process. For example, Geist can sample and I can play multiple different hits one after the other and Geist saves them as individual samples and distributes them on the pads.enroe wrote: ↑Wed Aug 25, 2021 7:51 pm "A Vst-sampler that samples" - what should be the advantage?

Some samplers can also resample themselves so no need to first record it to a track.
