If you're looking specifically for pads, I'd then recommend Vital. I didn't like it at first as I think (still do) that it sounds too thin for my taste. However, only recently I realized it's the best synth for pads I own.. The amount of options regarding stereo placement (mainly unison parameters) is amazing for that.
I still don't like it for everything else (leads, keys, etc), though.

If you want an advice: Forget about it. There isn't the one soft synth which does everything in great quality. There are a few which come close (no freeware for me), but, there's always one which does a particular thing better than the other. IMO.

Zebra, it easily can be your last synth, it’s 80% of synth sounds for me and I don’t even program my own sounds.

Sinisterbr wrote: Thu Aug 26, 2021 4:54 pm IMO you picked the right one for what you want. And mind you, there will soon (I guess next month?) be a new Surge version with an improved GUI (the worst aspect of Surge, again IMO)
this is not exactly true. The next version of surge will re-implement the current GUI in JUCE and add features but the GUI will be basically the same. The version after that - which is a 2022 project - will have substantially bigger changes.

IS there a new version of Surge coming out soon?

It’s funny, I’m an OG Surge owner, back when it was a commercial plugin. I used to use it quite a bit but I sort of drifted away. When it became freeware, I gave it a download and I remember why I stopped using it. The UI… not the best. If you’re new to synthesis, I’d maybe look to something that’s a bit more easy to use. It doesn’t get mentioned that much, but I always found Codex to have a great sound and an easy one-screen UI. I think it’s often on sale for pretty cheap. Vital.. it’s very good, I have a paid version of that too… but I’m not sure I’d recommend it to someone starting out, unless you’re just using presets. If that’s the case, just download Surge and Vital and go crazy.

Maybe stick with the basics for now and learn how to get as much as possible out just a couple of free synths.
Try some free ones and check how those feel. Vital is a good one.
I would say that Surge isn't the most obvious choice for a beginner, imho
have you made any good pads with phonec ? try out my free pack on here ( im not a sound designer there all hit and miss ) and please send me any if you have some theres not many sound packs avalable to ser what people have done , even the unfinshed has made packs and there boards of canada ish , i use phonec more for basic poly synth sounds or weird sounds arpeggiated sounds etc not lish pads please show me some lush pads warm and fat u have made cheers pal.
Phonec is awesome for pads, its probably what it's strongest at. I don't understand your comment at all. The factory library is full of them.

Surge is definitely a complex beast, so can do just about anything. Not the easiest to get to know.

I'm really looking forward to an updated GUI for it.
