HI!

I am quite a big FM fan and would really love to dive more into MSFs FM Module. Is there a Manual for it? I really dont get the function. Somehow when muting the audio output of a modulator i no longer can modulute a carrier with it. I was also wondering if there might be a preset that supports some kind of classcial fm algorithms when it comes to routing modulaters and carriers with each other.

So again: a proper manual would help =D Is there really nothing out there?

Looking forward to hear from you!

All the best from Stuttgart

Melda is very DIY. Presets and manuals, not really. This shortcoming hurts usability and causes many threads here.

But we have Chandler videos which are excellent:

Did you try to press F1 or Ctrl+H when your mouse hovers over a control? This brings up a help text for this specific contorl. Also don't forget the questionmark buttons here and there. Melda might not have the best "written" manuals, since there are procedual generated or so, but it has one of the most intuitive help systems, imo.

DIY, yes, but not only. Lack of presets? I don't think so. How and why? Lack of manual? I also don't think so. Read my text above. I also do not think that "this causes many threads here". Regading usability: I think that Melda help system even helps usability, since you can have help for the controls immediately.

Maybe you could be a bit more constructive and write down what you would do better?

The F1 or "?" gives very terse technical information, sometimes, "turn the knob up to increase compression". This reflects the Melda POV that "you should hear it to use it". It promotes a diy mindset that has some benefits. Melda states that they're not going to write general information about things like compression. But I think it would be useful. For me "% compression" knob on TurboComp is challenging.

In this case, FM instrument is not well documented and there are no presets. There was a thread about "how to make FM8 style growl" with MSF FM and at the end Melda concluded that it could not be done with his implementation of FM. Those details are useful and there is a small crowd who really understands those differences.( I am not one of them). But those differences do change what you may hear, try or edit to get your outcomes.

Are you turning down the volume of the operator in the operators panel or matrix panel. Use the matrix volume and it will silence the operator but still modulate the carriers.
Also in matrix panel I made every algorithm from DX7 and FM8 plus loads more complex ones as presets.
Enjoy

Sounds great jmg8.

Is "matrix panel" a preset? Is it global or in the FM generator? Where would I find it these presets?'

Thanks

I found the FM "matrix" panel as the lower most editor which is controlled by the FM operator panel which moderates the sound completely.

Is there any guidance for these presets and their usage? Or any presets at the operator level? Are these part of the Melda release?

More info would be helpful.

Thanks

There are some instruments that use the FM module you can check out (select the FM category on the easy screen).

Thanks! The presets at the "global" level are I think a very useful direction for Melda as it gives many more usable starting points.

For deep dive, say specifically on FM, presets at the "pure" FM level would be greatly appreciated. This would be both for foundational sound design starting points and to help learning.
