24-bit mixdown?

Hello!

OK, maybe nobody notice it before just because I gone wrong with setups etc, or maybe no one hit upon such weird sequence of operations, but...

Just for experiment, I created midi clip with just one note with velocity of 1 and MrRay electro piano VSTi as a filter (I also tried TheGrand with same result). Then I exported whole edit as wav-files 3 times: with 16, 24 and 32 bit depths.
Then I opened that files in SondForge, turned volume to max :-) and mentioned that 24-bit file actually sound just the same as 16-bit - audible harsh, while 32-bit is smooth as it should be.
Then I listened to Tracktion itself: while it was set up to 24/96 ASIO, all sounded OK (like 32-bit mixdown), and with 16/48 ASIO setup it sounded... well, just like 16-bit mixdown :-)
So there is a question: what's wrong with 24-bit rendering in Tracktion? Isn't it actually 16-bit, and if not, why it sounds like 16-bit?
