No, but that's only because my project managers have generally not been technically minded to spot where I know I definitely have taken an easier option.

Mine is i5-9600k, 6 cores, running at 4.3GHz, and turbos to 4.6.Teksonik wrote: Sun Sep 05, 2021 4:43 pm
My studio system runs an i7 8700K 6 Core 12 Thread that turbos at 4.7GHz.
It never runs out of steam, except with your patch, LOL!

yes, lazy, sloppy coding, that is just known as "coding" now. with some exceptions.

Real-time DSP signal processing is a much more CPU intensive task than gaming. Especially without a dedicated processor to offload to like your GPU handles graphics intensive calculations for 3D gaming.Vortifex wrote: Sun Sep 05, 2021 5:37 pm
The 'next gen/last gen' thing doesn't work when it comes to software developed for PC in my opinion, although after 7 or 8 years it's fair to assume your CPU could do with an upgrade. It's usually used in relation to games consoles where there's often a significant technological gap between recent games and consoles that were designed 10 years ago, whereas PC tech advancement is a gradual thing.
Let's not forget that Pigments was released in 2018. I don't know the range of tech specs VST developers tend to consider but it's not unreasonable that someone who built a decent new PC in 2015 would expect to be able to use a synth that came out just 3 years later without significant CPU issues, especially nowadays when I assume developers will be more savvy about optimisation than when Diva was released.
Let's also not forget that Arturia has added (since the Pigments 2018 release with just VA and wavetable synthesis): sample based, granular, additive synthesis, a utility engine, with a sub-oscillator; supplemental analogue waveforms; and two noise sources - so now up to three engines can be layered together. And MPE support.

So Pigments has been evolving since 2018, not standing still like your hardware is. And many reports here indicate that the new synthesis tools in Pigments 3 are heavy CPU hitters. I really don't doubt that, based on what I have seen.

Yes I use that patch as an extreme example. I programmed it on my 8700K and never even bothered looking at the CPU meter since it's rarely an issue but then I moved the patch to this system and it melted down in five seconds playing just one note.
You can bring the CPU demand down on that patch by lowering the Partials from 512.
I just did a quick test side by side with DUNE 3 on a similar patch that only used one VA Layer with 2 Oscs and Pigments used about three times as much CPU. The results are similar when using the WT Oscs as well. Pigments is not the most demanding synth in my arsenal but it can be hungry.

I used my unspent summer weekend entertainment budget (pandemic induced savings), to upgrade my rig to 9th gen Intel last year. I was still rocking 3rd gen Intel up to that point (2014-2020, and I was getting by). So I was basically at the 6 year mark...Vortifex wrote: Sun Sep 05, 2021 6:25 pm
The last version definitely was a step up in terms of juice required. I actually don't use it much for that reason. My CPU is an i7 6700k @4ghz which was actually quite good when I first got it but it's showing its age now. I mean it's still fine for the most part, but I'm finding I have to print to wav more often these days. Tbh I should probably shop around for a new CPU.
Big difference!
