Can we solo the Aux Return tracks?
I can not figure out how to do it. When I solo the Return track, it does not give the output as the Send track is muted.
It will be nice if we can solo it to work on the FX separately.

Try Settings -> Advanced -> Audio Engine -> Process audio tracks when muted

Why does it default off though? Does it take lot of CPU?

I think the original default behaviour was for muted (or non-solo'd) tracks to be totally muted and having "muted" plugins still running for the sake of send FX is new.

That depends on how many muted tracks there are and what kind of plugins are on them.
