MIDI Controller Question

OK, I've been using MIDI for years with Sonar and most recently Live. Now I'm trying out Tracktion here and I'm trying to write in Pan Controller data to the Piano Roll window and nothing is happening. This is making me question my understanding of MIDI controllers. I've tried drawing in Pan controller data and Volume controller data for several instruments (Wusikstation, cellofan, and the TRacktion sampler), with no results. Is this because these particular instruments don't have corresponding CC inputs for these controllers? Am I making this too hard? In my other hosts I can just paint in this pan and volume data and it works...

You know about the little A icon to the right of the track? I didn't until somebody was kind enough to point me to it. Anyway, click on it and you'll see a list of automatable parameter which you can activate.
If this doesn't answer your question, post back.

I also have a question on MIDI controllers, I'll try to get it answered through this thread instead of opening another one first...
How is MIDI controller setup in Tracktion? Of course you can trigger notes and record into a piano roll from a MIDI keyboard.
But what about recording automation parameters? For example, can I record knob tweaking into an automation track? (Or something comparable)
And, how difficult is it actually to assign VSTi knobs to a controller (in Tracktion)?
I'm considering the Evolution UC-33e...

pretty easy, you can drag the'A' onto the vsti 's
graphics knob to wire a CC controller to it.
Then select points on the automation curve that is
now beeing displayed on the same track.
A better way of working is through a hardware
controller for instance kenton spindoctor.
(i would recommend that one because these evolution controllers are so cheapy plastic)
Better vsti's have fixed controllers mapped to functions so you make a profile on the hardware controller once (kenton has some software editors to do this, free downloads) and they always work even if
you switch hosts.
I'm considering the Evolution UC-33e...

Thanks! That'll do.
But check your post, there's a text of you inside my quote

Just another question:
Is it possible to assign Tracktion's Play/Stop/Rewind to the appropriate UC-33 buttons?
And what about other Tracktion controls?

In Tracktion 1 you can't currently assign external midi controllers to tracktions play stop volume pan etc controls. But this has been requested for as long as I can remember, so it seems a definite that it will be in Tracktion 2. In fact, Jules did a prototype for Mackie to use with one of their hardware controllers at a show months ago.
So in T1 no, but in T2, yes.

But a possible solution would be to assign the start/stop and scroll left/right commands to keys that you don't need anyway and then use a software that can translate MIDI commands to key presses.
What software can do that?
