It would be a bit of a bummer if it didn't. Although I got used to the slow development of this industry, and the Corona stuff will surely have affected Steinberg as well. So, it might not come until Cubase 12.

Certainly hope it will come earlier though. Will be a nice "throw the dongle into the toilet" party. ;)
Yeah, that's true, but they still managed to release 11 last year, and this year things are better. Even if 11.5 does not come, it would be nice if they got rid of the dongle this year. :D

Not a Cubase user, but I am trying to look at the Elements version for some change. Perhaps I can join the party and upgrade to Artist/Pro (dongle-free) in future if I really get into it. I like some features I am seeing. Last time I tried Cubase (Elements), I was pissed off. This time it has been a better experience. Don't think I will switch from FL Studio, but nice for a change and experimentation.
If you own a Steinberg/Yamaha audio interface, or some other hardware, take a look at the Cubase AI to Artist upgrade. That's a very nice offer. 149 € at Thomann at the moment.

For me personally, Elements was a tad too limited. Although they at least added sidechaining support now, which is great (it wasn't possible at all with Elements before version 11 or so).

Thanks for the tip, but isn't Elements better than AI? I don't have any of their hardware btw.

Also, the main problem for me is the USB dongle. I can't think of upgrading before they change their licensing system - makes sense too now that we know dongle will soon be obsolete.

I can't say much if Elements is good enough, but it looks pretty decent. Also, the included sound sets are high-quality and one of the main reasons why I decided to try Cubase Elements.

I can consider upgrading from Elements to Artist/Pro in future as a discount and once the new licensing system is in place.

Post

Yes, Elements has more features than AI. I just wanted to say that, if you own Cubase AI already, then there's a nice upgrade path to Cubase Artist from there.

Post

Okay, but in my case I will need a nice upgrade offer from Elements to Artist/Pro. :) Guess it won't happen in near future, but can update to Elements 11/11.5 as soon as there is a sale.

it's not coming in 11.5, it's confirmed. Even Cubase 12 wasn't certain.
Where is it confirmed? Source please

Post

Yes, where? Didn't read that anywhere.

Steinberg just released Wavelab 11 and it still uses the dongle so if that is any clue we should look at V12 next year. Hope I am wrong though.
Steinberg has a lot in their hands. Licence scheme change, Apple Silicon support and also some fancy features that should validate the update price for 11.5

Post

I imagine it'll be a rolling 'phased' program of release across their product range... My guess is first (to be guinea pig/test case) will be Dorico 4, towards the end of this year.

FWIW - I think the v11.5(?) updates this year (including plugins and instruments) will have taken a ton of work getting native Apple Silicon support fully on board. As such, can't see they'll have had time to include any big, brand new features either. i.e. expectations, lowered.
System 1 - Win11; i9 13900HK miniPC; 64Gb; Iris XE graphics; Cubase 15.0.30; Studio Pro v8.1;UR44 i/o
System 2 - Win10; i7 4790; 16Gb; GTX750Ti; Cubase v14.0.41; WLab Pro v12.0.51; StudioOne v6.6.4

Post

Makes sense to me. We'll see.

The Cubase guy Greg Ondo said this in one of the live streams

Well, that's a shame. Guess I was carried away a little by the thought of getting rid of the dongle, forgetting how slow this industry moves. :(

Thank god. Thant means I still can buy the next version.

I like the way the assumption is that absolutely everyone wants to get rid of the dongle. Some of us actually prefer the dongle. Unless they replace it with a simple serial number authentication... What are the odds?

Post

I prefer the dongle, but I don't care a whole lot about the matter. I prefer it over a serial number because that ends with the computer's availability.
It'll be their rendition of iLok cloud auth. which isn't that hard to cope with.

Replacing it with a serial number? I would say NONE. At best, the hardware dongle will be replaced with a software dongle, as it's the case already with their low end software. Which, IMO, is even worse. I hope they keep offering dongle protection as an option. With the dongle, I can use the software wherever I want. With a soft dongle, I will be constrained to a single machine.
