I'm reminded of a story Mike Judge told once. (Bear in mind, this is my off-the-cuff recollection, but I believe it's (mostly) accurate.)

Beavis and Butthead had just become really popular and a DVD set had been released. As part of this release, some people were hired to do cell coloring on the animations, which was considered menial work that pretty much a monkey could do, but because Mike wanted to celebrate the release's success he gave them each a $500 bonus. Were they grateful for this? Nope. They complained something along the lines of, "The producers and other big names are making millions and all we get is a measly $500."

As I recall this was part of his motivation for creating "Extract," which was kind of the "anti-Office Space" and featured the boss as the protagonist.
A well-behaved signature.

Maybe I misunderstand the reference. Are you suggesting this Spencer dude should just be grateful for what he got? (notoriety, alleged trauma, and $200 for his parents)

$1.5million in damages is a bit extreme, yeah. But surely there's some sort of middle ground.

i think the issue he has is with his parents, not the band or label.

Ah 'spose my take could be summarized (more-or-less) as: Somebody puts in very little work/effort to somebody else's project and wants to be rewarded beyond proportion. (The "trauma" claim stanks like utter bullshit and thus I don't consider it relevant.)

I do find the concept of the image itself interesting and ironic. It seems like it's supposed to be a mockery of capitalism, like being conditioned to chase money or whatever? But the making of the image is literally parents exploiting their child to make money (and a band capitalizing on that exploitation to make money for themselves).

And that instead of addressing the larger issues of exploitation and consent, we just say he should get over it and take it up with his parents. I'm saying those two don't need to be mutually exclusive; he can be mad at his parents and at the overarching system/concept of exploitation as well.

Maybe it's just me, but I loathe the whole idea of parents putting their kids all over social media, using their kids for sympathy/likes/follows/affiliate-marketing, and the whole mindset that encourages them to do so. I'm not interested in selling naked pictures of my kids, or in this specific case, renting my kids out to someone who intends to take and sell naked pictures of them. I find the whole idea of that more than a little absurd.

I don't think suing every single person tangentially involved is necessarily the right way to address it. But neither is f**king off and doing nothing at all.

Experiencing trauma, only to be scoffed at by the world and told that one's trauma isn't valid, is not an experience I would wish on anyone.

I can only speak for myself, but, I absolutely detest such dramatic, exaggerated topics (why do people have to exaggerate that much to make their point? Is their point too weak otherwise?). And, in many cases, I can already tell by the headline who wrote the topic too.

Yes, I spend too much time on KVR.
