Don't sweat the navel gazery
whi is it navel gazery to point out that the rationale for now using 'producer' for music as 'person who created the product' isnt consistent anywhere else, and music only seemingly gets this rationale because producer was previously used to mean something quite specifically different.

Most people who produce a product which is the result of being produced by an act of production are actually called 'manufacturers'. Or sometimes 'craftsmen', 'artists', or 'engineers'.

farlkukar's examples included painters, dancers and photographers, so yes, for some values of 'there.' Most of the people i know who 'produce' (when used as a synonym for 'make' or 'create') things are artists, that's the environment I work in.

TBH, though, Im not really sure what your point is, as nobody actually used the word 'artist' previously in the thread so I have no clear context

True
I just don't see the point of sweating at a time in tech that enables the songwriter to also be the producer. I'm realizing my view is also twisted from gravitating towards recording artists that produce their own material.

The song as a form of communication and a form of expression predates technology and industry. So maybe the most basic definition of a song would be the same as for music itself, involving a pattern of sounds that makes it distinguishable from other patterns of sounds, and to be repeatable.

My own definition is a little more demanding, requiring words, melody, and structure. For some people no words are required, for others, no melody. That's all fine. What matters is that ideas and feelings are carried by sound from one intelligence to another.

As for how I do it, that's simple - magic!

Songwriting is the act of writing songs. A song has melody and lyrics. Good songs can be performed with just a singer and a piano or guitar, and still have a strong impact.

This distinguishes songwriters from producers. The first group aims for touching ones heart with minimal resources, the second group finds joy in polishing turds.

What intrigues me is the question behind the question. This thread was not started for discussing semantics only.

I call it struggling like a strugglebus til I have an intro, melody, some words, verse & chorus, then work it in to a finished song
Sometimes taking two little ideas & making a song out of it
Sometimes just having the song in my head & trying to bang out what I heard in my head
The struggle is kinda fun. I get to play with toys

how do i songwrite? i try to do what the people in my music collection do.

songwriting to me is the not-so-easy process of making words and melodies fit together really really well.

a lot of christmas carols and hymns do that, imho.

here's one.
